Camp, Canoe, Hike, Kayak, and Swim

There is no designated swimming beach at Wallace Creek. The Corps of Engineers posts swim beaches at five other Enid Lake recreation areas, Hickory Ridge, Persimmon Hill, Plum Point, Chickasaw Hill and Long Branch, and the Wallace Creek amenity list in the Corps brochure and on the Corps Lakes Gateway shows a boat ramp, picnic shelters, restrooms and a trail with the swim beach column left blank. What people swim from here is the shoreline either side of the concrete ramp, on their own judgement, with no marked area, no buoy line and no lifeguard. The one place on the project where swimming is flatly banned is the outlet channel below Enid Dam, which carries red Corps signs reading strong currents and hazardous bottom, no swimming or wading.

Wallace Creek sits on a low wooded point on the south shore of Enid Lake, a Yocona River flood control reservoir the Corps finished in December 1952 as part of the Yazoo Headwater Project. The earth dam runs 8,400 feet and the lake behind it holds roughly 16,000 acres of water inside 220 miles of shoreline. It is a working flood pool, not a constant level lake, so the Corps pulls it from a summer recreation pool near 250 feet down toward 230 feet over the winter. That swing is why the banks in most photographs show a wide apron of pale sand and red clay between the treeline and the water, and why depth at the ramp changes by season rather than by weather.

The campground holds 101 sites across three loops, Piney Woods, Lipe's Bluff and Woodpile, most with electric and water and a number with sewer. There are flush toilets and showers, a dump station, drinking water, a fish cleaning station, a playground, a large group picnic shelter and the Beech Hollow nature trail, which is an interpretive walk through the hardwood bottom rather than a lakeshore path. The boat ramp sits northeast of the camping loops at the end of the day use road, with its bottom at elevation 228 feet, and the parking above it is rocked and paved rather than a sand beach.

Fees split three ways here. Camping is reserved and paid through Recreation.gov before you arrive. Day use is a federal Corps fee of $5.00 per vehicle, collected at a fee vault at the ramp or bought ahead as the Wallace Creek Day Use Pass, which is sold daily or by the year and covers one non commercial vehicle. Reserving the large picnic shelter is a separate $50.00 per day, and Senior and Access passes do not discount it.

Wallace Creek is in Yalobusha County. Pope, the nearest town, is across the line in Panola County about five miles northwest and is the I-55 exit the Corps directions use. From exit 233 head east on County Road 36 about two and a half miles and follow the signs. The lake office at Enid answers at 662-563-4571. The lake is best known to anglers as the water that produced the world record white crappie at five pounds three ounces.
