Weeki Wachee Springs State Park
Spring Hill
Canoe, Kayak, and Swim
Swimming here is allowed only inside Buccaneer Bay, the roped, lifeguarded swim area on the spring pool, and only after you pay to enter the state park. Florida State Parks charges 13 dollars per adult, 8 dollars per child aged 6 to 12, and nothing for children 5 and under, and that one ticket covers the swim area, the mermaid theatre, the wildlife show and the river cruise. Free-swimming out at the spring boil itself is not permitted, and neither is swimming in the Weeki Wachee River below it. The park states its river rule plainly: swimming, or getting out of your vessel, is not allowed. Anyone picturing a quiet roadside spring they can slip into for nothing should look elsewhere on this coast.
The gate is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., every day of the year, but the water closes earlier than the park does. Slides stop at 4:30 p.m. and swimming ends at 5:00 p.m., so a late arrival buys very little time in the spring. The beach and swim area run daily year round. The two slides and the lazy river do not. In 2026 they ran daily March 14 to 23, weekends only March 24 to May 22, daily May 23 to August 8, then weekends only August 9 to September 30. Cannonball needs riders 48 inches tall, Pirate's Revenge 42 inches, and the Lil' Mates kiddie pool is closed for construction.
The detail that wrecks the most trips is capacity. On summer weekends the park fills to its vehicle limit in the morning, and once it is full ticket sales stop and nobody else is admitted for the rest of that day. There is no waitlist. Arriving at opening is the only dependable plan, and the Friends of Weeki Wachee app pushes live capacity alerts worth watching on the drive in.
What you are swimming in is a first-magnitude spring feeding a cone-shaped pool more than 150 feet across and about 45 feet deep at the centre, with a fracture below it opening into one of the deepest freshwater cave systems in the country. The 538-acre park belongs to the Southwest Florida Water Management District, which bought it in 2001 and leased it to the Florida Park Service in 2008. Water leaves the vent and runs roughly 7.5 miles to the Gulf.
Paddling the upper river is a separate, reserved activity. Every launch needs a reservation, private boats included, because the state caps launches at 70 per hour. A private launch costs 8 dollars per boat; a single kayak rents for 35 dollars, a tandem 51, a paddleboard 35, all through the on-site concession and all including the shuttle back from the 2.8-mile takeout. Motorized vessels, inner tubes, rafts, scuba gear, alcohol and disposable containers are all barred from the park ramp.
Since 2024 the FWC's Weeki Wachee Springs Protection Zone has covered 5.61 river miles from the spring boil to Rogers Park, making it a 140 dollar offence to anchor, moor, beach or ground a vessel anywhere along it. Manatees push up into the warm run through winter and gather at Hospital Hole, a deep sinkhole downstream; a residents' campaign to close that spot seasonally was still only a proposal in early 2026.
