Canoe, Kayak, and Swim

DeVoe Beach is a public park run by Tuscarora Township on the southeast shore of Burt Lake in Indian River, Cheboygan County. The park sits on a broad, shallow cove right beside the spot where the Indian River leaves the lake on its way toward Mullett Lake, part of the chain of lakes and rivers known as the Inland Waterway. The sand strip runs along the cove's east shore, with a grassy picnic area, a pavilion and a pair of restroom buildings set back behind it.

The park is on Oaks Glen Street (the Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council lists the address as 6521 Oak Glen St), a short walk west of the shops and restaurants in downtown Indian River. Drivers coming off I-75 take the Indian River exit and head into town, then follow the side streets toward the lake. A paved township lot sits right behind the beach. The township's park page lists parking and mentions no entry or parking fee, and map data for the lot tags it as free. The township does not post separate beach hours online, so check the signs at the entrance when you arrive.

The swimming here suits families and waders. The cove is shallow and sandy, so you can walk a long way out before the water gets deep, and that shallow water warms up faster in early summer than the open lake does. The township's park page says nothing about lifeguards and no source mentions staffed guard chairs, so plan on watching your own group. Burt Lake is a big, windy lake, and a strong west or northwest wind can push chop into the cove even when the river side looks calm.

The main thing to watch is boat traffic. The Indian River channel, a marina and a carry-in paddle launch on Mack Avenue are all within a few hundred feet, and powerboats run between Burt Lake and the river all summer long. Stay inside the cove and away from the channel mouth, and keep kids closer in on busy weekends. Water quality is the other issue, since E. coli advisories have been posted at beaches on this end of Burt Lake. Check Michigan's BeachGuard listings before you go, and skip swimming for a day or two after a heavy rain. Expect a packed beach on the Fourth of July, when the township holds its fireworks show here, and during the Top O' Michigan boat races and the Summerfest family night.

Away from the water, the park has a picnic pavilion, grills, benches, drinking water, and a volleyball court, and the township lists the park as ADA accessible. Veterans Pier, a barrier-free fishing pier, reaches out into the cove and is a popular place to watch the sun set over Burt Lake. Kayakers and canoeists use the beach and the nearby launch as a starting point for trips up the Inland Waterway, and the Indian River Kayak Biathlon has used the beach as its base in July. Burt Lake State Park, with a larger beach and a campground, is a few minutes away on the same end of the lake if DeVoe is too crowded.
