Fairfield Beach is the south shore swimming beach at Buckeye Lake State Park, reached from Lake Shore Drive Northeast outside Thornville in Fairfield County, about three miles west northwest of town and roughly 28 miles east of downtown Columbus. It is one of only two designated public beaches on the lake. The other, Crystal Beach, sits on the north shore about a mile across the water. Both still operate, and both are run by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

The park land here forms two lobes, and people get them confused. The larger western peninsula holds the Fairfield Beach boat ramp, a road loop and a bird and wildlife watching point, and a bright paved path traces its entire shoreline, which reads like sand from the air. The actual beach is on the eastern lobe: about 350 feet of groomed sand facing northwest into the bay, with a buoy line set offshore to mark the swim area. Aim for the two paved lots off Lake Shore Drive Northeast, not the ramp.

There is no entrance fee and no parking fee, which holds at every Ohio state park. The beach is open Memorial Day through Labor Day and swimming is allowed during daylight hours only, inside park hours of 6am to 11pm. There are no lifeguards at either Buckeye Lake beach. ODNR posts the water as swim at your own risk, and that is the operating assumption. Dogs are barred from the sand entirely and must be leashed elsewhere in the park. Alcohol is not permitted in public areas.

Behind the sand are latrines, a shelter house that can be rented online, mini shelters on a first come first served basis, picnic tables and grills, a playground, a sand volleyball court and pickleball courts. Three short walking paths start here, two hike and bike paths of 0.4 and 0.2 miles plus a 0.4 mile paved path, all rated easiest on the park map. The lake's 4.1 mile multipurpose trail is not one of them. That path runs between the North Shore boat ramp and Lieb's Island, on the far side of the water.

Check the water before you drive out. Buckeye Lake is shallow, warm and ringed by farm ground, and cyanobacteria blooms are a recurring summer problem here. The Ohio Department of Health runs its BeachGuard sampling program from Memorial Day to Labor Day and posts advisories for this site under the name Buckeye Lake - Fairfield. A USGS lake gage named for this beach sits a few yards off the sand and reports lake level.

The other local hazard is boat traffic. Buckeye Lake is 3,100 acres and carries an unlimited horsepower rating, there is a launch ramp on the next peninsula over, and seasonal docks at Fairfield Beach are handed out by lottery. Powerboats and personal watercraft work the open water all summer, so stay inside the buoys.

The lake is man made and old. The dike across the South Fork of the Licking River was finished in 1830 to feed Ohio's canal system, the reservoir was renamed Buckeye Lake in 1894, and it became the state's oldest state park in 1949. Cranberry Bog, the floating sphagnum island out in the water to the north, is a National Natural Landmark and can be visited by ODNR permit only. Shoreline anglers pull perch, bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass and catfish. Park office is (740) 527-4218, Monday through Thursday.
