The Sugar Maple Trail is a short, pleasant woodland walk at Madison Lake State Park, four miles east of London, Ohio, in the flat farm country of the Darby Plains. It's a modest trail, roughly a third of a mile, and it makes no pretence otherwise; what it offers is a quiet loop through hardwoods and along the shore of Madison Lake, and for a small park in central Ohio that's exactly right.

The park is built around 106-acre Madison Lake, formed in 1947 when the Madison Lake Dam was raised on Deer Creek, with 76 acres of land surrounding it. That compact scale is the park's character: it's a local, unhurried place rather than a destination, and the Sugar Maple Trail is its walking route, taking you through some woodlands and along the lake with essentially no elevation change, which makes it genuinely accessible for almost anyone. You'll find the trailhead off Wood Lane.

The name is a promise the trail keeps in autumn. Sugar maples are the tree that makes Ohio's fall colour famous, and a short walk beneath them in mid-October is a legitimately good reason to visit a park this size. Spring brings wildflowers and birdsong to the same woods, and summer offers shade beside the water.

Dogs are welcome on the trail and should be leashed where required, which makes this an easy stop for anyone travelling with a dog through central Ohio. The park's other amenities round out an afternoon nicely: a boat ramp for getting onto the lake, a 300-foot sand beach for swimming, changing booths and restrooms, plus picnic areas and shelters.

Being a small lake park in the Darby Plains, Madison Lake sees its heaviest use on warm summer weekends when the beach fills, while the trail itself stays quiet almost regardless. It's free to visit, and it's an easy detour from Columbus, roughly half an hour west.

Bring insect repellent in summer, since the wooded lakeshore holds mosquitoes, and expect mud on the trail after rain. Pack a picnic and make an afternoon of it with the beach. It's not a grand hike and doesn't pretend to be, but as a shaded third-mile stroll under sugar maples beside a quiet Ohio lake, with a sand beach waiting at the end, it's a genuinely nice way to spend an hour.
