Cave

The Hobbit Caves are a whimsical little cluster of caves in the lush, green depths of Logan Canyon, tucked up the Right Hand Fork drainage in northern Utah's Bear River Range. Set in a mossy, fern-draped hollow that looks like it wandered straight out of Middle-earth — think Fangorn Forest — it's a beloved family adventure that's especially magical for kids.

The caves themselves are small: children delight in scrambling in to play Hobbit, while most adults will only squeeze partway in. The real charm is the whole enchanting setting, complete with a pretty five-foot waterfall on the Right Hand Fork right beside the crossing. Rock climbers also know the area for its bolted routes.

To get there, drive about 8.5 miles up Logan Canyon (Highway 89) and turn onto Right Fork Canyon Road (watch for the small sign), continuing 0.4 mile to a pullout that fits about five cars. From there it's a short but steep scramble down to the creek, crossing on wooden boards wedged into the rocks — which get slippery when wet, so wear good shoes.

The caves are best from about May through October. Bring a headlamp for peeking inside, watch your footing on the boards and rocks, keep a close eye on little ones near the water, and leave the mossy magic as you found it.
