Disc Golf

The disc golf course at Massanutten is set in the Blue Ridge foothills of McGaheysville, Virginia, tucked into the sprawling four-season resort that occupies Massanutten Mountain in the Shenandoah Valley. Playing here means throwing in genuine mountain terrain, which is a rarity on the East Coast and the main reason the course is worth seeking out: the elevation and the mountain woods give it a character that valley-floor park courses simply can't match.

The course has evolved over the years, and disc golf directories carry both an older layout and a current one at this location, which is worth knowing when you look up hole maps, since you may find beta describing a version that no longer exists on the ground. Checking the current layout before you play saves confusion at the tees.

Access takes a little navigating, since the course sits inside the resort property rather than on a public street. From US-33, head east for about 10.7 miles to a left onto Resort Drive, follow that for 1.6 miles to a left onto Massanutten Drive, pass through the gate, and continue roughly 1.5 miles through the resort to parking on the left, above the general store. Because this is private resort property with a gated entrance, and resorts change their policies on outside visitors from time to time, it's worth confirming current access with Massanutten before making a long drive.

The setting is the payoff. The Shenandoah Valley and Massanutten Mountain make for beautiful surroundings, with the resort offering a full slate of other activities, from skiing in winter to a waterpark and golf in summer, so the course pairs naturally with a family trip where not everyone throws discs.

Spring through fall is the natural season, with autumn in the Blue Ridge genuinely spectacular and worth timing a round around. Mountain weather brings afternoon storms in summer, and winter turns the property over to skiing.

Come with water, sun protection for the open holes, sturdy shoes for the pitched terrain, insect repellent for the Virginia woods, and spare discs, since mountain slopes and trees are an expensive combination. For a mountain round in the Shenandoah Valley with a whole resort's worth of other things to do around it, Massanutten is a genuinely distinctive place to play.
