Pintler Falls is a peaceful backcountry waterfall in the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness of southwestern Montana, a reward at the end of a pretty forest-and-creek hike in the high mountains of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. Set at around 6,417 feet in genuinely wild country, it's the kind of moderate, uncrowded outing that captures what the Pintlers are about: quiet trails, dense timber, clear water, and a real sense of wilderness without an overwhelming effort to reach it.

The hike follows the Pintler Creek Trail (Forest Service Trail #2037) through dense forest and along the creek, climbing gently to the falls and their calm pool at the base. It's commonly done as an out-and-back of about 4 miles with roughly 500 feet of elevation gain, a moderate half-day that suits reasonably fit hikers and rewards them with a serene, forested cascade rather than a thundering showpiece. The creek company most of the way is part of the charm.

The falls sit within the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness, a rugged, lightly traveled range straddling the Continental Divide that sees far fewer visitors than Montana's marquee wilderness areas. The most common access towns are Anaconda, Philipsburg, Wisdom and Wise River, all a fair drive from the trailhead, which is a big part of why the country stays so quiet.

This is remote high country, and conditions govern everything: trails and stream crossings change with snow, ice and high water, snow lingers into early summer at this elevation, and high runoff in spring can make the creek crossings and the approach genuinely tricky, so verifying access before you go is well worth it. Cell coverage is nonexistent, and this is bear country, so standard precautions apply.

Roughly July through September is the practical window, once the snow has cleared and the creek has dropped to friendlier levels, with wildflowers early and cooling temperatures and quiet trails in the fall. The forested route holds shade, which makes it pleasant even on warm summer days.

Come prepared for a wilderness day: layers for changeable mountain weather, sturdy footwear for the creekside trail and any crossings, plenty of water and a way to treat more, bug spray for the early-season mosquitoes, a map, and a plan left with someone given the remoteness. For a moderate hike to a quiet waterfall in one of Montana's least-crowded wilderness areas, Pintler Falls is a genuinely rewarding escape.
