Hike and Swim

Beach 1 is the first swimming beach inside Presque Isle State Park, the sandy peninsula that curls out into Lake Erie on the north side of Erie, Pennsylvania. The park is run by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), and the state describes Beach 1 as a long stretch of sand near the park entrance with restrooms and a reservable picnic pavilion. It faces the open lake on the west side of the peninsula's narrow neck, so the water here is full Lake Erie surf rather than the calm bay on the other side.

To get there, follow Peninsula Drive (PA 832) north from West 6th Street past the Tom Ridge Environmental Center and into the park. Beach 1 starts within the first half mile on the left, marked by a yellow Beach 1 post, and it runs for roughly half a mile along the shore. Cars park in pull-offs and lots along Peninsula Drive, and a short walk through the trees puts you on the sand. The paved Presque Isle bike path also runs past it, so many people ride in from the park entrance.

The beach is wide, flat sand that slopes gently into the lake, with driftwood and beach glass scattered along the tide line and a row of rock breakwaters sitting offshore. Lake Erie is the shallowest and warmest of the Great Lakes, but it is still cold in early June and usually reaches comfortable swimming temperatures by July and August. Park rules are strict here: you may swim only inside a designated guarded zone while lifeguards are on duty. Outside a guarded zone you can wade up to your knees and no more than 10 feet from shore. DCNR lists the guarded season as Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, normally noon to 7:30 p.m. Which beaches get lifeguards changes day to day with staffing, and the guarded section here has been posted as Beach 1 West in past seasons. Beach 1 was one of the guarded beaches over Labor Day weekend 2026. Check the board at the inbound lane near the park entrance, which lists the beaches open for swimming that day.

There is no entrance fee for Presque Isle or any other Pennsylvania state park, and swimming at Beach 1 is free. Fees apply only to extras such as reserving the pavilion.

Wind matters on this shore. A west or northwest wind builds waves and currents quickly, which is the main reason swimming is limited to guarded zones. The Erie County Department of Health tests the park's beaches for E. coli during the season, and a red flag or a Restricted Swimming sign means you can stay on the sand but cannot go in the water until retesting clears it. Inside a guarded zone, leashed dogs are allowed only in the tree line. Outside it they may go on the sand and in the water on a leash.

Barracks Beach (Beach 3) is just up the road, and the rest of the park's numbered beaches line Peninsula Drive for several more miles toward Beach 11 and Gull Point. Beach 1 is also a common spot for sunset walks, beach glass hunting and summer events, and the Tom Ridge Environmental Center just outside the gate has exhibits on the peninsula and its shifting sands.
