Conneaut Township Park

Conneaut Township Park puts a quarter mile of Lake Erie beach at the bottom of a wooded bluff at the far northeast corner of Ohio, about eleven minutes north of I-90 and a few miles short of the Pennsylvania line. The park covers 60 acres and dates to 1926. Despite the way it often gets described, the city does not run it. The operator is the Conneaut Township Park Board of Commissioners, an independent board with its own superintendent and fiscal officer, at 480 Lake Road in Conneaut.
The swimming is off a broad shelf of sand mixed with stone that runs west to east below the bluff, split near its middle by Kelsey's Run, a small creek that crosses the sand into the lake. Parking sits up on the bluff, and Trex boardwalks drop from the lots down to the beach. There is no admission fee, and no fee to park. The park keeps a MobiChair beach wheelchair on hand and the restrooms are ADA accessible, which makes this one of the easier Lake Erie beaches to actually reach the water at.
Nobody is watching the water. The park states plainly that this is an unguarded, swim at your own risk beach with no life saving personnel. What it does provide is throw ropes and life rings mounted on the back of each No Lifeguard sign from May 1 through October 1, first aid and current information at safety kiosks on every boardwalk entrance, and three lettered rescue markers so a 911 caller can say where they are. Red post 1 covers the beach west of Kelsey's Run in front of the west lot, white post 2 runs from just east of the creek to mid beach, and blue post 3 covers mid beach east to the Port Authority. Learn them before you swim. The structural currents that form along the harbor breakwall and the stone groins at the ends of the beach are the real hazard here, and they pull hardest on windy days.
Water quality is monitored by the Ohio Department of Health, which samples this beach weekly through the summer and posts results and advisories publicly. The site has logged 52 advisories totaling 156 days since 2008, most of them for high bacteria counts. Recent seasons have been mild, with a single two day advisory in each of 2024 and 2025 and three advisories totaling eleven days in 2026. The pattern is the usual one for a creek fed Great Lakes beach, so check the posting and skip the day or two after heavy rain.
Gates open at 7am daily and close promptly at dusk, April 1 through November 15. Outside that window the gates and facilities are shut, but you can still walk in to the park and the beach, with the understanding that roads and sidewalks are not cleared in winter. Restrooms open around May 1 and close November 1. The concession stand runs daily from Memorial Day weekend through September, 11am to 8pm, and lends out sports equipment.
Two pavilions and a gazebo are first come, first served, no reservations taken, each pavilion with sixteen twelve foot tables, water, electric and grills. There are four pickleball courts plus tennis, basketball, sand volleyball, soccer, bocce, horseshoes, shuffleboard and a playground. Beach glass hunting is a local tradition and you can take driftwood and stones within reason. Fires are allowed only in the existing rings. No dogs or pets of any kind, no alcohol, no drones, no vehicles on the sand, and no overnight parking or camping.

Conneaut Township Park has taken the initiative to section off and mark three specific areas of the beach as a part of our safety program to aid 911 callers and rescuers in case of an emergency. Our goal is to help prevent confusion during an emergency by giving areas of the beach identifiable markers to allow callers to quickly find and communicate the nearest marker location to emergency personnel. This will allow emergency personnel to respond in a more timely and efficient manner. We encourage all park patrons to familiarize yourself with the color/numbering and locations of these marked posts on the beach. Details below.
