Rip Rap Access
Cedar Crest, Oklahoma
Swim
Rip Rap Access is a public swimming spot on Spring Creek in the green hill country of Mayes County, northeastern Oklahoma, and its great virtue is simple: it's a free, legitimate, public way into one of the state's prettiest swimming creeks. Spring Creek runs clear and cool through this corner of Oklahoma, and while much of its bank is locked up in private land and private resorts, this stretch crosses U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property, which means anyone can wade in without asking permission or paying a gate fee.
The name tells you exactly what to look for. Past flooding on the creek required the bank to be built up with rip rap, the heavy rock armouring used to stop erosion, and that rocky bank is both the landmark and the way down to the water. You park along the road, walk across and over the rocks, and you're in the creek where it crosses onto Corps land.
Getting there takes a little local navigation. From Ear Bob Road, continue west about half a mile past the turnoff for Old Twin Bridges, then turn north on N4390 Road. Park off the north side of the road near the creek, where the built-up rip rap is impossible to miss. The spot sits at roughly 36.127 north, -95.194 west, which is worth having on a map, since this is back-road country without much signage.
The most important thing to understand here is the property line. This access works only because the creek crosses Corps of Engineers land, and the private Cedar Crest community lies downstream, so staying on Corps ground and not drifting down into the private stretch is what keeps this spot available to everyone. That single piece of courtesy is the whole deal, and it's the reason a free public access exists at all on a creek this heavily posted.
Spring Creek itself is the draw: clear, spring-fed water running over gravel and rock, cool even in the thick of an Oklahoma summer, with shaded banks and pools deep enough for a proper dip. Summer is unquestionably the season, when the water is at its most welcome, though flows drop through a dry late summer and rise fast and muddy after storms. There are no facilities of any kind, no restrooms, no lifeguards, no trash service.
Come with water shoes for the rocky bottom and the rip rap itself, which is uneven and hard on bare feet, plus sun protection, drinking water and a trash bag. Watch the creek after heavy rain, keep an eye on kids around moving water, and pack out everything you bring. It's an unpretentious, unmarked, genuinely free slice of one of Oklahoma's best swimming creeks.
