Taylor Ferry Beach

Taylor Ferry Beach is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers swim beach in the Taylor Ferry recreation area on Fort Gibson Lake, about five miles east of Wagoner in Wagoner County, Oklahoma. The Corps built it as a man-made sand beach on the north side of State Highway 51, directly across the road from Taylor Ferry South Campground. Fort Gibson Lake is the reservoir behind Fort Gibson Dam on the Grand (Neosho) River, finished in 1953, and it covers close to 20,000 acres with about 225 miles of shoreline. The beach faces the main body of the lake rather than a narrow cove.
From Wagoner, drive east on Highway 51 for roughly five miles. The campground entrance is on the south (right) side of the highway; the beach and the Taylor Ferry North day-use area sit on the north side, reached by North Taylor Ferry Road. A gated entrance leads to a parking lot just above the sand, so the walk from car to water is only a minute or two. The Corps warns that buying a pass does not guarantee a parking space and that vehicles left outside the marked spaces can be ticketed and towed, which matters on hot summer weekends.
The swim area is a strip of imported sand that slopes into the lake. The Corps does not publish a depth or a buoy layout, so wade in and check the bottom before letting kids range out. The water is reservoir water, warm by midsummer and rarely clear, and wind across the open lake can push small waves onto the sand. No lifeguard is listed for this beach. What the Corps does provide is a loaner life jacket board, a playground next to the sand, and two covered shelters with grills and tables that can be used by larger groups.
This is not a free beach. Every vehicle pays a federal day-use fee of $5 per day, bought on Recreation.gov or on site, and the pass is good until 8:00 p.m. on the date shown. A $40 annual pass for Taylor Ferry Beach is also sold, and paper annual passes must be traded for a hang tag with a ranger. The Recreation.gov listing notes that interagency passes such as America the Beautiful are not accepted here. If you pay on site you will not get a paper receipt; rangers check your license plate instead.
The beach is seasonal. Recreation.gov shows it closed with the gates locked from early October 2026 through April 30, 2027, reopening in May 2027, so plan summer visits only. Take the usual open-water precautions seriously. On August 30, 2024, a 70-year-old Tulsa man died while swimming in chest-deep water at the Taylor's Ferry north swim beach after an apparent medical problem, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol as reported by KTUL. Watch for boat traffic near the edges of the swim area and for afternoon thunderstorms, which can arrive fast on a big open reservoir.
Taylor Ferry South Campground across the highway has 95 sites (89 with electric hookups), showers, a dump station and a boat ramp, and is reserved through Recreation.gov. Taylor Ferry North, beside the beach, has the day-use boat ramp and picnic grounds, and the Corps notes several stores and marinas nearby for supplies and boat rentals. For current conditions call the Fort Gibson Lake Office at 918-682-4314.
