Swimmer's Delight lives up to its name — a popular swimming and camping spot along the clear Van Duzen River, tucked among towering old-growth redwoods in Humboldt County's Van Duzen County Park near Carlotta, California. On a hot summer day, this shady riverside retreat draws families and river-lovers to its gentle pools, cool green water, and cathedral-like redwood groves.
The river is the heart of it. Swimmer's Delight is known for excellent river access, with gentle pools perfect for cooling off, wading, and easy swimming, and many campsites sit right on the water. The same pools are shared, in season, with the salmon and steelhead that run the Van Duzen — a reminder of the wild, living river you're swimming in. It's a quintessential Northern California redwood-country swimming hole.
The campground makes it easy to stay a while: around 30 first-come, first-served sites for tents and RVs set beneath the big trees, with coin-operated hot showers and a modest nightly fee (cash or check). It's a comfortable, shady basecamp for exploring the Van Duzen and the surrounding redwood country.
Summer is the season for swimming, when the river warms and the pools are inviting — though on hot July and August days the day-use swimming area can fill to capacity and close to additional visitors by midday, so arrive in the morning to be sure of a spot. Bring water shoes for the rocky riverbed, watch the current and depth (especially with kids), and pack out everything you bring in. Cool, clear, and wrapped in redwoods, Swimmer's Delight is one of Humboldt County's most beloved river swims.
