Skateboard

On Vashon Island in Puget Sound, the Burton Street Course is a beloved community skatepark that has been rolling since 1998 — and, importantly for the rainy Northwest, it's covered, so a passing shower won't end your session. Today it's the heart of the Burton Adventure Recreation Center (BARC), run by the Vashon Park District.

The 3,600-square-foot street course packs in a nice variety for its size: a 6-foot mini ramp (a generous 24 feet wide), a 16-foot-wide wall ride, a couple of 6-foot quarter pipes and a mellower 4-foot quarter, plus a funbox, a pyramid, and a grind box. The broader BARC campus adds an outdoor skate bowl, a cement pump track, and an expanded disc golf course, so there's plenty to fill a day.

Helmets and elbow and knee pads are required — and available to borrow if you didn't bring your own. There's a small session fee (a few dollars), and an inexpensive annual membership brings the per-session price down, so it's an easy, affordable stop.

It makes a fun detour on a Vashon Island day trip via the ferry from Seattle or Tacoma. Check the Park District for current hours and session times before you head over.
