Eichelman Beach
Kenosha
Swim
Eichelman Beach is the sand beach inside Eichelman Park, a City of Kenosha lakefront park on 3rd Avenue at about 61st Street, a few blocks south of downtown and the harbor. It sits on the Lake Michigan shore in the Third Avenue lakefront neighborhood, with Wolfenbuttel Park running north toward the harbor breakwater. The city lists it among its Lake Michigan beaches, and the Wisconsin DNR includes Eichelman Beach in its statewide beach monitoring program.
The park address is 6125 3rd Avenue. From Interstate 94, take Highway 158 (52nd Street) east into Kenosha, then head south on Sheridan Road or 3rd Avenue to the park. Visit Kenosha says the city's lakefront beaches have free admission and free parking. Most visitors park along 3rd Avenue or the side streets, then walk across the lawn to the sand. The paved lakefront path runs along the back of the beach, and the downtown streetcar loop and HarborPark are a short walk north.
The beach is a curved pocket of sand that faces east and southeast, tucked between a rock revetment on the south side and the long stone breakwater that protects Kenosha Harbor to the north. That shelter is why the water here is usually calmer than at open stretches of the Kenosha shore, and on summer days you will see families wading in the shallows close to the sand. The bottom is sandy near shore, with large rocks along the revetments. Lake Michigan stays cold well into summer, often in the 60s Fahrenheit in July and August, and an offshore wind can drop the temperature sharply in a few hours. There are no lifeguards at any City of Kenosha lake beach, so you swim at your own risk.
There is no fee to use the beach or park. Family guides list the city beaches as open from sunrise to 10 p.m.; check the posted signs when you arrive. City rules ban fires, grills and glass on the beaches and ban flotation devices in swimming areas. A city ordinance makes it unlawful to be in the water within 50 feet of a pier, jetty, breakwater or seawall, with fines up to $1,000. That matters here, because the swim area is bounded by rock on two sides. Keep to the open middle of the cove and stay off the breakwater.
Water quality is tested through the summer. Kenosha County's health division posts advisories when E. coli counts climb past state limits, usually after heavy rain or strong onshore wind, and closes beaches at higher levels. Current status appears on the Wisconsin DNR beach health site during the summer monitoring season. Rip currents and high waves are a real danger on this part of Lake Michigan when the National Weather Service issues a beach hazard statement, and swimmers have drowned here. Stay out when waves are up.
The park itself has wide shaded lawns, picnic tables, benches and a playground close to the beach. Wolfenbuttel Park next door has formal flower gardens, a lakefront labyrinth and views up the shore to the harbor and lighthouse. Simmons Island Beach is across the harbor if you want a larger beach.
