Camp, Hike, and Swim

Muskego Park is a 193-acre Waukesha County park on the west side of the City of Muskego, Wisconsin, and its swim beach sits on a small pond of roughly two acres near the middle of the park. The county bought the land in 1958, which made it the first regional park in the Waukesha County system. The beach is one of six designated county swim beaches, and the park around it mixes open lawns, picnic areas and a campground with a 60-acre stand of old hardwoods that the state protects as Muskego Park Hardwoods State Natural Area.

The entrance is at S83 W20370 Janesville Road, a short drive west of downtown Muskego in the southwest Milwaukee suburbs. Several parking lots sit close to the pond, so the walk from car to sand is short. Every vehicle that enters needs either a Waukesha County Parks annual membership or a daily permit. The county reads license plates at the gate, and you can buy the permit online up to five days after your visit before a notice is mailed. The county's own pages don't print the price, but GMToday's Waukesha County summer guide lists the daily vehicle permit at $7. There is no separate charge for the beach once you are in.

The beach itself is a sand strip along the pond's southwest shore, backed by a beach house with restrooms, showers and vending machines. Swimming is allowed only inside the roped shallow area, and there are no lifeguards; the county runs all six of its beaches as swim at your own risk. A pond this size warms faster than the big lakes in the area, but it is still pond water, so don't expect lake clarity. Unlike some county beaches, dogs may swim at the regular beach here, but they must be leashed once out of the water. Inflatables are fine inside the swim area. Boats of any kind are not allowed on the Muskego Park pond.

The beach season runs from the second Friday in May through the last Sunday in September, from sunrise to sunset. The park itself stays open year-round from sunrise to 10 p.m. Smoking, glass, alcohol, grills and fishing gear are banned within 40 feet of the sand and beach house. The county tests the water weekly for E. coli and closes the beach for blue-green algae or counts above 1,000; readings between 235 and 999 bring a swim-with-caution advisory. Bacteria often run higher after heavy rain, so check the county beach page or Park Alerts before you go.

Away from the water, trails wind through the State Natural Area, which joined the Old-Growth Forest Network in 2021 and is known for spring wildflowers and woodpeckers. The county has permanently closed the Orange/Yellow trail in the hardwoods because of erosion, and woodland restoration work is planned there. The family campground has electric sites and is open April 1 through October 31. There are also sand volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, an archery range, a bridle trail and rentable picnic areas and a beach house, and in winter the trails are used for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
