Big Foot Beach State Park is a 272-acre Wisconsin state park run by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on the east end of Geneva Lake, less than two miles south of downtown Lake Geneva in Walworth County. Established in 1949, it takes its name from Big Foot (Maumksuck), a Potawatomi leader whose band lived around the lake until the United States forced them out in 1836. Big Foot Lake was the lake's original English name. The swim beach is a narrow strip of sand and small stones on Buttons Bay, running a few hundred feet along the west side of South Lake Shore Drive with open water and the wooded far shore in front of it.
The park entrance is at 1550 S. Lake Shore Drive, reached by following Lake Shore Drive south out of town. Day-use parking sits just inside the park east of the road, and restrooms and a bait machine are near the front of the park by the beach. The beach itself is on the lake side of Lake Shore Drive, a two-lane road with a 25 mph limit, so you cross the road to reach the water. Watch kids at the crossing.
The water is clear and the bottom slopes gently, so much of the area near shore is shallow enough for wading. It does not stay that way. In June 2018 a swimmer drowned off this beach in about eight feet of water roughly 110 feet from shore, so weaker swimmers should stay close in. There are no lifeguards. Buttons Bay is also a favorite spot for powerboats to anchor and tie up together on summer weekends, and boat traffic can come close to the swim area. Geneva Lake is a deep glacial lake, so expect the water to feel cool early in the season and most comfortable from July into early September.
There is no separate beach fee, but every motor vehicle in a Wisconsin state park needs a state park vehicle admission pass. Under rates in effect since August 19, 2025, a daily pass is $13 for vehicles with Wisconsin plates, $16 for out-of-state plates and $3 for Wisconsin residents 65 and older. An annual pass is $28 with Wisconsin plates and $50 for out-of-state vehicles. Visitors who use the park without paying first face an extra $5 charge. The park is open every day of the year from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Check conditions before you go in late summer. In August 2024 a harmful blue-green algae bloom spread across Geneva Lake, and the DNR closed the beach here with no set reopening date while the municipal beaches around the lake closed too. If the water looks green, scummy or paint-like, stay out and keep dogs out too. Current DNR property notices and the Wisconsin beach health advisories are the places to check.
The rest of the park is set back from the lake. There are about 5 miles of easy hiking trails through woods and meadow, a 100-site family campground with 34 electric sites and a shower building, and roughly 40 acres of picnic grounds with about 150 tables, grills, playground equipment, volleyball courts and one reservable shelter. Ceylon Lagoon, a 6-acre pond inside the park with a fishing dock, is good for a canoe or kayak, and Geneva Lake is open to paddlers too. There is no boat launch or rental in the park, but a private vendor just south of the entrance rents boats and public launches are in downtown Lake Geneva and Linn Township. Pets are not allowed in the general picnic areas.
