Swim

Lower Spring Lake Beach is the Village of Palmyra's public swimming beach, a park of roughly one acre at 306 Anemone Street on the west shore of Lower Spring Lake in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. The lake is a 104-acre impoundment of the Scuppernong River, held back by a small dam at its outlet on the village side, and the beach sits just south of that dam. Homes line the western shore, and the rest of the lake's 3.1 miles of shoreline is mostly woods and wetland. The village Park and Recreation Department runs the beach, the sand, the playground and the rentable beach pavilion.

The beach is a few blocks east of downtown Palmyra. Turn onto Anemone Avenue from the village streets just south of East Main Street; there is a small parking area beside the park on Anemone. Motor vehicles are not allowed on the park grounds themselves, so park on the street or in the lot and walk in. Village park rules close all parks from 10 PM to 6 AM unless you hold a permit from the village clerk.

The swim area is a buoyed section off a short sand beach. Lower Spring Lake is shallow throughout, with a maximum depth of about 11 feet and an average of about 4 feet according to the Wisconsin DNR, so the water warms quickly once summer arrives. Away from the sand the lakebed is mostly soft muck. There is no current to speak of. No lifeguard is on duty; the village calls it a swim at your own risk beach. From June through Labor Day the beach is staffed on weekends from 10 AM to 4 PM, weather permitting, and restrooms and a concession stand are open only during those staffed hours. Weekday staffed hours are announced on the village's Facebook page.

Entry is free. The village states there is no charge to enter the beach area when no lifeguard is on duty, and it runs the beach without lifeguards. If guards are ever added, check the Park and Recreation page for any charge. The beach pavilion can be reserved for gatherings through the Village Hall at 262-495-8316.

Know the conditions before you swim. The DNR lists Lower Spring Lake as impaired for total phosphorus, and the lake carries Eurasian water-milfoil, curly-leaf pondweed, banded mystery snails and common carp, so expect plants underfoot and some algae by midsummer. The Lower Spring Lake District runs a weed harvester through the summer to keep the milfoil in check. The beach itself met state E. coli standards when the DNR last assessed it, and the DNR keeps a sampling station there, but results are not posted online in an easy form, so watch for signs at the beach after heavy rain. Stay away from the dam and spillway a short distance north of the swim area. Glass bottles are banned in village parks, and only leashed dogs are allowed, with owners required to clean up after them.

Beyond the swim area the park has a playground, a grill and picnic space along the water. The lake holds bluegill, largemouth bass and northern pike, and the DNR notes good shore fishing along the north side off Highway 59, where its public boat launch sits just east of the village. Boaters share the lake, and slow no-wake zones are marked with buoys and signs. Palmyra also runs Aurelian Springs Park on Blue Spring Lake Drive, with a pavilion, restrooms and a hiking trail.
