For a quieter, more adventurous taste of the Grand Canyon's South Rim, the hike to Dripping Springs delivers big views and genuine backcountry solitude — a world away from the crowded corridor trails. Starting near Hermits Rest at the far west end of Hermit Road, the route drops below the rim on the rugged, unmaintained Hermit Trail, then branches onto the Dripping Springs Trail to reach its namesake: a shaded rock overhang where spring water drips steadily from a fern-fringed lip, nurturing a small hanging garden of green in the surrounding desert.

The out-and-back runs roughly six and a half to seven miles with a stiff climb on the return. This is a real wilderness trail, not a groomed path: it descends steep, rocky switchbacks with serious exposure in places, offers very little shade, and — importantly — has no signs or trail markings past the Dripping Springs junction, so you need to know exactly where you are and resist the urge to wander beyond the spring. The reward is sweeping canyon scenery, the elegant amphitheater of Hermit Basin spread out below you, and a fraction of the crowds you'll find on the Bright Angel or South Kaibab trails just a few miles east.

There's real history underfoot. The Hermit Trail was built in 1912 by the Santa Fe Railway as a deluxe scenic route down to Hermit Camp, a tourist retreat in the canyon below served by an aerial tram — a rival to the Cameron-controlled Bright Angel Trail of the day. You can still see beautifully engineered stretches of cobbled trailbed from that era, and the whole corridor retains a wild, half-forgotten feel. Strong, experienced hikers sometimes link Dripping Springs with the Boucher Trail for a longer loop, but for most people the spring itself is a worthy, strenuous half-day-plus destination.

A park entrance fee applies. The single most important thing to carry here is water — far more than you think you'll need. There's no reliable source until the spring, and even that shouldn't be counted on, especially in the brutal heat of summer, when this shadeless, south-facing trail becomes genuinely dangerous by midday; heat illness and rescues are a regular occurrence on the Hermit. Wear sturdy footwear with good tread for the loose, rocky tread, start at dawn, carry salty snacks, tell someone your plans, and remember that the entire climb out comes at the end, when you're hottest and most tired.

Spring and fall are far kinder seasons here than summer, and winter is possible for the prepared, though the upper switchbacks can hold ice and snow. However you time it, Dripping Springs offers something increasingly rare at the Grand Canyon: a beautiful, historic, genuinely wild trail where you can have a corner of the world's most famous canyon nearly to yourself.
