Round Lake Park Beach
Eden Prairie
Hike and Swim
Round Lake Park Beach is the City of Eden Prairie's unguarded public swimming beach on Round Lake, inside the 23-acre Round Lake Park at 16691 Valley View Road. The lake is small and nearly circular, about 30 to 32 acres, and sits in the Purgatory Creek chain of lakes managed for water quality by the Riley-Purgatory-Bluff Creek Watershed District. The park sits right next to the Eden Prairie Community Center and Eden Prairie High School, about 2 km northwest of the city center, and it is where the city has held its Fourth of July celebration since 1984.
The park is reached from Valley View Road, just west of the community center. Several free lots serve the park, and the closest ones to the water are on the east side near the tennis courts, the splash pad and the picnic shelters. From there it is a short walk to the sand. The beach faces west across the lake from the east shore, a little south of the boat ramp, with restrooms and drinking fountains close by.
The swim area is a marked section of water off a sand beach that city crews rework through the summer. The lake is deeper than it looks for its size: the watershed district lists an average depth of 11 feet and a maximum of 37 feet, so the bottom drops off once you leave the marked area. Round Lake is an unguarded beach; the city's guarded beach is at Riley Lake Park across town. Swimming here is at your own risk, the city asks people to stay inside the designated area, and pets are not allowed on the beach. The posted beach season runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Outside that window the county does not test the water.
There is no charge to use the beach, park or parking. The Round Lake splash pad next to the beach is also free and runs daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. from late May through Labor Day.
Bacteria is the main thing to watch. Hennepin County Public Health samples the beach for E. coli from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and the city closes Round Lake to swimming when a sample fails. That has happened several times in recent summers. Spikes usually follow a heavy rain after a dry spell, when runoff washes in, and most closures last a few days until a clean retest. Skip swimming for a day or two after a big storm, and check the city's updates page or the signs at the beach before getting in. The city also closes the beach for a few days most summers for a preventive treatment against algae, weeds and the parasite that causes swimmer's itch. Eurasian watermilfoil and curly-leaf pondweed both grow in the lake, and the lake is on the state impaired list for mercury in fish tissue.
The rest of the park includes a fishing pier, a public boat ramp, a walking and biking trail around the lake, a playground, a skate park, tennis, basketball and sand volleyball courts, ball fields, and picnic shelters. In winter the park has outdoor rinks for skating and hockey.
