The Saguaro Loop and Nature Trail is one of the friendliest introductions to the Sonoran Desert anywhere in the Phoenix area, an easy loop in Scottsdale's McDowell Sonoran Preserve that packs classic desert scenery, interpretive signage and big mountain views into under two miles. It's the rare trail that works equally well for a family with small kids, a visitor with one free morning, and anyone who wants to actually learn something about the desert rather than just walk through it.

The loop covers about 1.9 miles with roughly 190 feet of elevation gain, taking most people somewhere between half an hour and an hour. The path is flat and wide, and the walking is genuinely easy, which is why it's such a good pick for families. Along the way, the connected Bajada Nature Trail is dotted with educational placards covering native plants and animals and the relationship between people and the land around them, so the route doubles as an open-air lesson in Sonoran ecology.

The scenery earns the name. Saguaros stand along the trail in numbers, joined by a diverse mix of other cacti, desert trees and flowering shrubs up close, with the McDowell Mountains and long desert views opening up in the distance. Spring brings wildflowers and blooming cactus, and the low light of early morning and late afternoon makes the whole preserve glow.

Facilities at the Gateway Trailhead are excellent by any standard: paved parking, clean modern restrooms, a potable water station to fill up before you head out, and rangers frequently on hand to answer questions or point you toward a route. It's free to visit, and the trailhead serves as a hub for the preserve's larger network if you want to extend the day.

There is very little shade anywhere along the route, and the Sonoran sun is unforgiving; heat is the real hazard here, not the terrain, which is why starting early and carrying more water than a two-mile hike would normally suggest is the standard advice. The tread is rocky enough that proper hiking shoes or boots beat sneakers, and desert plants are uniformly armed, so staying on the trail keeps spines out of ankles.

October through April is prime season, when temperatures are pleasant and the desert is at its best; summer visits are best confined to just after sunrise. Bring water, sun protection, a hat and real footwear. For a short, beautiful, well-supported walk through genuine saguaro country a few minutes from Scottsdale, it's hard to do better.
