Schroon Lake Town Beach
Schroon Lake
Canoe, Kayak, and Swim
Schroon Lake Town Beach is the public swimming beach run by the Town of Schroon on the north end of Schroon Lake, in the hamlet of Schroon Lake in Essex County, New York. It sits inside the Town Park on the lake side of Main Street (US Route 9), a few hundred feet from the shops and restaurants downtown, and looks south down a nine-mile lake ringed by forested Adirondack hills. Schroon Lake covers about 4,100 acres, averages 56 feet deep and reaches 152 feet at its deepest point, so the water here is clear, cold at the start of summer and big enough to kick up a chop on windy afternoons.
From I-87 take Exit 28 and follow Route 9 south into the hamlet, or come up from Exit 27. At the south end of Main Street, turn toward the lake on Dock Street or Leland Avenue. There are marked spaces along Dock Street and roadside parking on Leland Avenue. The Town and NYS DEC boat launch shares the park, next to the Boathouse Theater, so trailers come and go on the same streets.
The beach is a long strip of soft sand below a grassy hill, with a roped swim area that runs roughly 250 feet along the shore. The bottom is sand, the inshore water suits small children, and the outer part of the ropes is deep enough for a floating dock that swimmers use for sunning and jumping. Lifeguards are required by New York State rules whenever the beach operates. The town's posted season starts the last week of June and runs through Labor Day, with swimming hours of 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. If no lifeguard is available on a given day, the town closes the beach to swimmers, so check with the Town Hall on Leland Avenue if you're making a special trip.
There is no admission charge. The town's own page lists no fee, and Adirondack Life's regional beach guide lists it as free. No parking fee is posted for the Dock Street spaces or the Leland Avenue roadside. The town describes the beach as open to the public during guarded hours, and the regional tourism office promotes it to visitors as well as locals, with no resident sticker or pass mentioned anywhere.
A few things to know before you go. The lake stays chilly well into July, and the water past the floating dock drops off into open lake where boat traffic from the launch and the nearby marina is steady on summer weekends, so stay inside the ropes. Because the lake is long and runs north to south, a south wind has nine miles to build waves before they reach this beach. Read the posted rules at the entrance for pets and other restrictions. On the Fourth of July the whole park fills for the town celebration, with children's activities at the beach, an evening concert and fireworks over the water, so expect crowds and limited parking that day.
The rest of the Town Park is right behind the sand. There is a playground at the top of the hill, a grassy slope that works for picnics in the shade, a town pavilion, tennis and basketball courts, and the boat launch for anyone bringing a canoe or kayak. Each July the Schroon Lake Association has held a large arts and crafts fair in the park, and Main Street's restaurants, ice cream stands and the Strand movie theater are a short walk away.
