South Twin Park Beach is the City of Amery's public swimming beach, listed by the city as South Twin Park and Public Swimming Beach at 310 Water Ave in Amery, Polk County, Wisconsin. It sits on the east shore of South Twin Lake, a small lake a few blocks west of Keller Avenue (Highway 46) and the downtown business strip. The City of Amery owns and maintains the park, and its own facility page says the beach is there for public use at no charge.
Getting there is simple. From Keller Avenue in downtown Amery, head west a few blocks to Water Avenue, which runs along the south side of the park. The city does not describe a dedicated beach parking lot, so plan on parking along the nearby streets and watching the posted signs. If you are bringing a boat or kayak, the lake's public launch is a separate site on Baker Street to the northwest, a one-lane gravel ramp with a dock, a handful of stalls and no restrooms, according to the Wisconsin DNR.
The swim area is a short strip of sand. The DNR's lake record describes about 200 feet of public swimming beach with facilities and park land, and lists South Twin Lake at roughly 72 to 74 acres with a maximum depth of only 12 feet. It is a shallow headwater lake fed by a stream from North Twin Lake and drained by an outlet to the Apple River, so the water warms up early in summer and there is no current to speak of. There are no lifeguards on duty, and the city states plainly that swimming is at your own risk. The city does not publish beach hours or a season.
There is no fee to swim. The only charge the city lists is for the South Twin Beach Shelter, a picnic pavilion that can be reserved online for $20 a day. Walk-up use of the beach, playground and pier is free.
Water quality is the main thing to check before you go. The Amery Free Press has reported swimming advisories at the beach after weekly tests found high fecal coliform bacteria, with the advisory staying in place until two clean tests in a row. Waterfowl are the usual source, and bacteria counts tend to rise after heavy rain. Swimmer's itch has also been a long-running problem on South Twin, and the paper's advice was to towel off and shower soon after swimming. Look for posted advisory signs at the beach.
Beyond the sand, the park has a picnic pavilion, a small playground and a fishing pier that was rebuilt in 2012. The lake holds northern pike, walleye, largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, perch and bullheads, so the pier gets use from anglers. Pickleball courts sit at the north edge of the park, and downtown Amery's shops and restaurants are a short walk east.
