Verona Beach State Park is a 1,735-acre park run by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation on the eastern shore of Oneida Lake, the largest lake lying entirely inside New York. The guarded swimming beach sits on the lakefront just south of the hamlet of Verona Beach and just over a mile south of the village of Sylvan Beach, in the Town of Verona, Oneida County. The park address is 6541 Lakeshore Road South, and the park office phone is (315) 762-4463.
The entrance is off State Route 13 northwest of the City of Oneida. The park road runs west from Route 13 to a large paved lot that was rebuilt as part of a $4.3 million improvement project announced in 2013, which also brought a new bathhouse, food concession and picnic shelters. From the lot it is a short walk across a shaded picnic grove to the sand.
The swim beach is a strip of sand facing west across open water, so on clear evenings the sun sets straight over the lake. Oneida Lake is broad and fairly shallow for its size, which means it warms up quickly by midsummer, but wind out of the west can push real waves and chop onto this shore. Lifeguards are posted only during the summer swim season. In 2025 the park listed swimming as open weekends and holidays from late May into early June, then daily from mid-June through Labor Day, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dates shift a little each year, so check the current schedule before you go. A splash pad next to the beach area has run 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in recent summers. Pets are not allowed on the guarded beach.
This is not a free spot. New York State Parks charges a vehicle entrance fee here of $7 per car from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in season (buses $35). The day-use area and trails are open year-round from dawn to dusk. An Empire Pass ($80 per season) covers vehicle entry at this and most other state parks and DEC day-use areas.
The main hazard on this beach is blue-green algae. Oneida Lake is nutrient-rich, and harmful algal blooms have closed the Verona Beach swim area several times in late summer, including in July 2011, August 2022, August 2024 and July 2025. During a closure you can still walk the sand, but staff advise staying out of the water entirely, and dogs should be kept out too. State beaches are tested for bacteria at least weekly and the park posts current beach water quality results, so look at those and at the DEC harmful algal bloom notification page before driving out in July or August. Avoid any water that looks like paint, scum or floating green mats.
Away from the beach the park has a 47-site campground with 11 waterfront sites (all electric, open roughly late May through mid-October), several reservable picnic shelters and a community room, playgrounds and ball fields. A launch for non-motorized boats lets you put in a canoe or kayak, though trailers are not permitted. About 13 miles of trails wind through the eastern part of the park past Black Creek, 9 Acre Pond, cattail marshes and bottomland swamp, and they are open to hikers, bikes and horses in summer and to cross-country skiers and snowmobiles in winter. The eastern section is also open for hunting in season, by permit.
