Camp and Swim
Carolina Hemlock is a superb swimming and tubing spot on the South Toe River, right alongside the Carolina Hemlock Recreation Area campground in the Pisgah National Forest below Mount Mitchell, North Carolina. The South Toe pours straight off Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi, so the water is extremely cold, around 52°F even in July, but crystal clear and clean enough to see all the way to the bottom of a deep hole that drops about fourteen feet.
The swimming area has rocks to jump from and a large concrete platform for sunbathing and jumping, and the river runs deep in places. The campground stretches about half a mile along the river, making for excellent tubing from the giant rocks at the upper put-in down to the highway bridge, where you climb out and walk back up the riverside paths. It is a genuinely fun run with a number of exciting rapids and drops, though there is no lifeguard on regular duty.
Facilities are basic, a changing area but no showers or concessions, and a nominal day-use fee is collected. The site closes seasonally. Reached via NC-80 north from the Blue Ridge Parkway near milepost 345, it is a classic, family-friendly Blue Ridge swimming hole.
