Canoe, Kayak, and Swim

Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park sits on the Lake Erie shore just east of where the Grand River empties into the lake, and the beach is why most people drive in. Lake Metroparks, Lake County's park district, runs the 21 acres at 301 Huntington Beach Dr. in Fairport Harbor, Ohio. Sand stretches about a third of a mile along the shoreline, with a marked swim area, a concession stand, a paddle rental shack and the Harbor View Boardwalk, a wooden deck built at beach level so visitors who cannot cross soft sand can still get out to a view of the water, the breakwall and the lighthouse. The park gate is open 6:00 am to 11:00 pm year round. Phone is 440-256-2118.

Lifeguards are real here, but only for part of the summer. In 2026 Lake Metroparks put guards on the sand 11 am to 7 pm daily on May 23 to 25 and May 30 through August 9. End of season beach hours took over August 10 through Labor Day, and all beach operations, including concessions, paddle rentals and parking fees, stop after Labor Day. Outside those dates the water is open but unguarded, and the park says so plainly on its own page: lifeguards are not on duty, swimming is at your own risk.

Parking is collected at the entrance gate 10 am to 6:30 pm daily through the guarded season, weather permitting. A Lake County resident car pays $2 for the day or $25 for a season pass. An out of county car pays $3 daily or $35 for the season. Buses are $10 in county and $20 out of county per day, with no bus season pass offered. Once the gate shuts down for the year, parking is free.

Concessions and paddle rentals run 11 am to 7 pm on the same calendar. A sit on top kayak is $10 an hour single or $15 double, a stand up paddleboard is $10 an hour, and both are ages 16 and up unless an adult comes along. The Lake Metroparks Paddle Card, sold at the rental shack on the sand, is $80 for ten hours or $100 unlimited and is good Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. The park also has a playground, picnic shelters, grills, a fire ring, paved trails, portable restrooms, an emergency phone and a canoe and kayak launch.

Water here gets tested hard. The Lake County General Health District samples the beach every day between Memorial Day and Labor Day, weekends and holidays included, and posts results 24 hours later. Advisory signs go up when a single sample passes 235 E. coli per 100 ml. Ohio Department of Health BeachGuard tracks this beach as OH491555 and shows how often that happens: 7 advisories covering 9 days in 2026, 4 advisories over 7 days in 2024, and a rougher stretch a decade back with 17 advisories and 38 days under advisory in 2015. Stay out of the water for 24 to 48 hours after a half inch of rain in a day, or when the lake looks rough and dirty. Lake Metroparks also watches for harmful algal blooms and signs the beach when one turns up.

Two hazards belong to this specific beach. The harbor entrance piers sit about a third of a mile west, and currents run hard along Great Lakes piers and breakwalls even when the open shoreline looks calm, which is why the marked swim area is the place to be and why flotation devices are not allowed inside it. Shoreline erosion has also closed lake access for dogs, which stay leashed on the paved lot or in the dog area east of the concession stand. No alcohol, no glass, and no smoking on the sand, the boardwalk or in the concession area. Umbrellas and pop up canopies up to ten feet square are fine on sand and grass.

Harmful Algal Blooms

Algal blooms have become more noticeable in Ohio’s lakes, streams, and rivers during the last few years. Although most blooms are green algae and not harmful, there are some that are actually a type of cyanobacteria that have the ability to produce toxins – called harmful algal blooms (HABs).
