Hike, Rock Climb, and Swim
Fish Creek is a hidden swimming-hole gem tucked into the Angeles National Forest near Lake Hughes, California — a clear, cool creek that carves a series of pools and a slick waterfall slide out of the rugged mountains north of Los Angeles. For those willing to rock-hop and wade their way upstream, it's a refreshing reward and a longtime favorite of locals beating the Southern California heat.
From the trailhead it's about a mile of creekside scrambling to reach the falls, walking in the water at points (sometimes hip-deep, depending on the season). The payoff is a cluster of swimming holes: an upper pool that's surprisingly deep, a shallower lower pool around five feet, a natural waterfall slide, and higher ledges for those who like to jump. It's a true choose-your-own-adventure swimming spot.
Play it safe. If you ride the waterfall slide, mind your head on the rock, and never jump or dive without checking the depth and the bottom first — water levels change with the season. This is also rattlesnake country, so watch where you put your hands and feet, keep dogs leashed, and give any snake a wide berth.
A few practicalities: an Adventure Pass (or Interagency pass) is required to park in the national forest, so display one on your dash. Bring sturdy shoes you don't mind soaking, plenty of water and sun protection (the first stretch is exposed), and pack out everything you bring in. The creek runs best, and the pools are deepest, from roughly March through July before the summer heat dries things down.
Earn it with the hike, respect the water and the wildlife, and Fish Creek delivers one of the most fun and least-known mountain swims within reach of Los Angeles.
