Sespe Gorge is a string of inviting swimming holes strung along the wild Sespe River in the Los Padres National Forest, in the rugged backcountry north of Ojai and Ventura, California. Carved into one of Southern California's last free-flowing rivers, these clear pools are a refreshing reward at the end of a scenic canyon hike — a favorite summer escape for families, hikers, and anyone looking to trade the coastal crowds for a quiet dip in the mountains.

The adventure starts at the Piedra Blanca Trailhead in Rose Valley, reached by following Highway 33 about 15 miles north of Ojai and then another 5 paved miles to the parking area (you'll need an Adventure Pass or an Interagency pass on your dash). From there the Sespe River Trail rolls gently up the canyon, and swimming holes appear at intervals along the riverbed — the farther you walk, the more solitude you'll find. About four and a half miles in, near where Bear Creek tumbles into Sespe Creek, you'll reach one of the best: a deep, shady pool beside a big sandbar, framed by cottonwoods and canyon walls.

It's a classic Southern California backcountry swim. The water is cool and clear, the shade is welcome on a hot day, and there's a small camping area near the confluence if you'd rather make it an overnight and have the pools to yourself at dawn. When school lets out for the summer the closer holes can get busy, so an early start — or an extra mile or two up the trail — is the secret to finding your own quiet stretch of river.

Timing is everything out here. The Sespe runs its fullest and most beautiful from late winter into early summer, roughly March through June, when snowmelt and seasonal rain keep the pools deep and the canyon green. By midsummer the water drops and the canyon heats up, so go early in the season for the best swimming, start your hike in the cool of the morning, and carry plenty of water for the walk back.

Beyond the swimming, the Sespe backcountry is wild and storied. This is one of the largest roadless areas in Southern California and a stronghold of the endangered California condor, whose recovery centers on the nearby Sespe Condor Sanctuary — keep an eye on the sky and you might spot one of these massive birds riding the canyon thermals. The pale sandstone humps of the Piedra Blanca formations near the trailhead are worth a scramble in their own right, making the whole area a rewarding day even beyond the pools.

Come prepared for real backcountry: there's little shade for long stretches of trail, so bring sun protection, sturdy shoes, and more water than you think you'll need, and keep an eye out for poison oak and ticks along the brushy banks. Pack out everything you bring in, and you'll discover one of Ventura County's most rewarding hidden swims — a wild river, a string of clear pools, and a canyon all your own.
