New Hogan Lake is a 4,400-acre reservoir tucked into the golden Sierra Nevada foothills of Calaveras County, California, about 30 miles northeast of Stockton near the little town of Valley Springs. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, it's a quintessential Gold Country lake, oak-studded hills rolling down to blue water, with enough shoreline, coves and open water to spread out a busy summer weekend. It's a favorite of boaters, anglers, campers and swimmers looking for a big, uncrowded lake within easy reach of the Central Valley.

Fishing is the lake's calling card, and it runs year-round. New Hogan is well known for striped bass, along with largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish, a mix that suits both serious anglers and kids with a bobber. A valid California fishing license is required for anyone 16 and older. Four public boat ramps put watercraft on the water easily, and the lake is roomy enough for water skiing, wakeboarding, sailing and simple cruising without everyone stacking up in the same cove.

Camping is plentiful. Five campgrounds ring the lake, ranging from developed sites with full facilities to primitive backcountry spots, with roughly 207 reservable sites across Acorn, Oak Knoll and Deer Flat, plus a group campground that can host up to 50 people. Acorn is the perennial favorite for boaters and anglers thanks to its direct lake access and proximity to the ramps. Away from the water, an extensive trail network for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding threads the surrounding foothills, with mostly easy-to-moderate routes and wide views over the lake and oak savanna.

Swimming is permitted, and the lake's gentle shorelines make for pleasant wading and dips on hot days. There are no lifeguards on duty anywhere on the lake, and as a working reservoir the water level can rise and fall substantially through the year, changing shorelines and exposing hazards, so it's worth looking over an area before swimming. Summers here are genuinely hot and the foothill sun is unrelenting, which is exactly why the water feels so good.

Spring is lovely, with green hills and wildflowers before the grass turns gold; summer is peak season for water sports; and fall brings warm days and thinner crowds. Come with sun protection, plenty of drinking water, a fishing license, and everything you need to be comfortable in the heat. Between the striper fishing, the wide-open water, the foothill trails and the Gold Country setting just up the road from Stockton, New Hogan Lake is one of the Sierra foothills' most reliably good days out.
