Pearrygin Lake State Park
Winthrop
Camp, Canoe, Hike, Kayak, and Swim
Pearrygin Lake sits in a bowl of shrub steppe and pine about a mile and a half northeast of Winthrop, and it is one of the few places in this corner of Washington where the water actually gets warm. Most of the lakes within an hour of here are cold alpine or glacial melt on the far side of the North Cascades Highway. Pearrygin is a shallow reservoir at 1,929 feet, low enough and dry enough that summer air in the 80s and 90s pushes the surface into the mid 60s through mid 70s by July. People stay in for hours rather than minutes.
The park wraps around the lake in two units, east and west, and they are not the same experience. The main swim beach is in the east day use area, on the southeast shore below the east campground. It is a strip of sand and fine gravel with a buoyed swim line marking off the shallow water, backed by a broad mowed lawn with big shade trees, picnic tables, barbecue stands and a volleyball court. A bathhouse with restrooms and hot showers sits just up the slope. The west unit has its own smaller marked beach and bathhouse, reachable on foot, but the east side is where families spread out for the day.
Entry is gentle. The bottom at the beach is sand over firm gravel and it shelves out slowly, so small kids can wade a long way before it is over their heads. There is nothing to jump from. The piers and docks in the park are built for fishing and boats, not for diving, and the lake only reaches its 49 foot maximum depth well out past the swim line.
Swimming is sanctioned and marked, but nobody is watching. Washington State Parks does not staff lifeguards here, and state rules put swimming at your own risk and require anyone twelve or younger to have a responsible adult with them inside a designated swim area. As of late September 2026 the only restriction posted on the park is a burn ban limiting wood fires to designated pits. Nothing bars swimming, and no algae advisory is posted.
Day use runs on the Discover Pass: $10 for a single day or $45 for the year, good across Washington state recreation lands. Launching a boat adds $7 a day. Gates open at 6:30 a.m. and close at dusk. Dogs are fine on leash. Camping fills both units from roughly April into late October, with 83 sites on two loops in the east campground alone, plus cabins and a rentable vacation house, all booked through the state park reservation system. Camping shuts for winter while the grounds stay open for snowshoeing and Nordic skiing.
The lake is a reservoir, dammed in 1921 and topped up by a diversion off the Chewuch River, and it carries a stocked rainbow trout fishery, so expect boats out early and late. A separate Department of Fish and Wildlife launch sits at the north end, closed to vehicles from November into the fourth Friday in April. The 3.1 mile Rex Derr Trail climbs out of the east side through shrub steppe past an old homestead if you want to dry off on foot. Winthrop itself is five minutes down the road, a boardwalk and false front town at the confluence of the Chewuch and the Methow, and the last real stop before Highway 20 climbs west into the Cascades.
