Falls Pond sits on the northern edge of North Attleborough, and it is really two ponds rather than one. MassWildlife describes 112 acres of water split into two impoundments joined by a culvert under Reservoir Street. The northern basin, also called Coral Lake, is a 63 acre impoundment of the Ten Mile River that averages 13 feet deep and reaches 32 feet at its deepest. The southern basin, known as Reservoir Pond, covers 50 acres and runs shallower, averaging 8 feet. Swimming happens on the north basin, at the town beach inside the Joseph F. Zaino Memorial Conservation and Recreation Area at the end of Barbara Road.

The town acquired both ponds in the 1960s for recreation and flood control, and the Conservation Commission still operates the dams in coordination with the Department of Public Works. Parks and Recreation runs the beach. The most important thing to know before driving out here is that this is a residents only beach. The posted Barbara Road rules state plainly that the beach is for North Attleborough residents, and since February 2022 a pass has been required from Memorial Day through Labor Day. A resident pass costs 25 dollars per vehicle, a senior pass costs 5 dollars, and a Massachusetts boat trailer pass costs 25 dollars. A valid sticker is needed both to enter and to exit the gate. Anyone from outside town has no legitimate way in during the summer season.

Gate hours shift with the calendar. From April 1 to Memorial Day the gate is open 7 AM to 8 PM with no fee. From Memorial Day to Labor Day the same 7 AM to 8 PM hours apply but a pass is required. From Labor Day through October 31 the hours drop to 7 AM to 6 PM, again with no fee. The town warns that police have to be called to let anyone still on the property out after closing time, so do not linger. The area is under 24 hour surveillance.

There are no lifeguards. The town's own signage says swim at your own risk, and Parks and Recreation staffs beach programming only in July and August. Facilities are thin. There is a large paved parking lot, which the pass fee covers, and a paved state boat ramp. The ramp is open to Massachusetts residents only, with a 25 horsepower motor limit, a 25 mile per hour speed limit, all traffic circulating counterclockwise around the pond, one skier per boat, and no tubes, rafts, or jet skis. Swimmers share the north basin with those boats, which is worth weighing before striking out from shore.

Water quality is the real hazard here, and it is not theoretical. Falls Pond closed for high bacteria in June 2024, closed again for E. coli in June 2025, reopened briefly on July 24, 2025 after clean samples came back, then closed again four days later because the geometric mean of its five most recent samples was still too high. That rule catches people out. One clean test result on its own does not reopen the beach, so check the town's current status before loading the car. Separately, the state Department of Public Health has issued fish consumption advisories covering PFAS and mercury in both basins, with the strictest limits on largemouth bass for children under 12 and for pregnant or nursing women. The Department of Environmental Protection told the town that swimming remains safe at the current PFAS level.

The bottom is predominantly mud with rock outcroppings, and water clarity in the north basin runs about three feet. The town draws that basin down roughly five feet over the winter, so shoreline depths in early spring are not what they will be in July.
