Regatta Point Beach is the guarded swimming area in the Regatta Point section of Quinsigamond State Park, a day-use park run by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). The park has two separate pieces on the Worcester (west) shore of Lake Quinsigamond: Regatta Point, about 25 acres north of Route 9, and Lake Park, south of Route 9. Lake Quinsigamond is a long, narrow lake of roughly 772 acres that forms the line between Worcester and Shrewsbury, and the water in front of Regatta Point is part of one of the oldest 2,000 meter competitive rowing courses in the country. The beach is a short strip of sand on the lake's edge just north of the Kenneth F. Burns Memorial Bridge.
The park entrance is at 10 North Lake Avenue in Worcester, directly across the road from the UMass Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial's University Campus, just north of the Route 9 (Belmont Street) intersection. Parking is inside the park, a short walk from the sand. On big regatta weekends in spring and fall, private cars are not allowed into Regatta Point at all, and race organizers send spectators to outside lots and shuttles, so check the rowing calendar before planning a beach day around one of those dates.
The swimming area is a small sand beach fronting open lake water, so the guarded zone is a slice of a big, deep lake rather than a shallow pond (Lake Quinsigamond runs 50 to 85 feet deep in its main basin). Pay attention to where the guards mark the limits and don't stray past them. Water is fresh, generally calm, and warms up through July and August, though wind and boat wakes from the main lake can chop it up. DCR staffs the beach with lifeguards for the summer season, which usually starts around Memorial Day weekend. In recent seasons Regatta Point coverage has run through Labor Day, a little longer than at Lake Park, but staffing and dates change year to year, so outside that window you are swimming unguarded. Pets are not permitted on DCR swimming beaches.
There is no entry fee for the beach itself, but DCR charges a daily parking fee here all year: $8 for vehicles with Massachusetts plates and $30 for out-of-state plates, payable through DCR's Yodel parking pass portal. A Massachusetts state parks annual pass covers it. Hours are sunrise to sunset.
Stay inside the guarded area. Swimming is not allowed along other parts of the Regatta Point shoreline, including the North Beach section, which is posted with no swimming signs. In 2022 a teenager nearly drowned there on Memorial Day evening after the lifeguards had gone off duty, and the lake has seen other drownings over the years. The water just off the beach is busy with rowing shells, sailboats and motorboats, especially on weekends and race days, so keep well clear of the course and the docks.
DCR lists picnic areas with grills, reservable pavilions, restrooms, showers, accessible fishing, a beach mat and a loaner beach wheelchair for the park as a whole. Regatta Point is also the base for a community sailing program and the area's rowing clubs, and its shoreline is the main public viewing spot for the big spring and fall regattas. Lake Park, the park's other section south of Route 9, has a second swimming beach, picnic grounds and tennis courts.
