Houghton's Pond Beach
Milton
Hike and Swim
Houghton's Pond is a 24-acre, spring-fed kettle pond in the Blue Hills Reservation in Milton, Massachusetts, about ten miles south of downtown Boston. The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) runs it as the Houghton's Pond Recreation Area, and the public swimming beach is the sand strip along the pond's north shore, below the visitor center and the historic Refreshment Pavilion. The pond formed when retreating glaciers left a kettle hole roughly 10,000 years ago, and it has been the main swimming spot in the reservation since the state took over the land in the 1890s.
The recreation area is entered from Hillside Street in Milton, a short drive from I-93. DCR says parking at Houghton's Pond is free of charge, and the lots close at 8 p.m. unless signs say otherwise. Several lots are spread around the beach, picnic groves and ball fields. Without a car, the MBTA 716 bus (Canton Village Shoppes to Mattapan Station) serves the pond, with weekend and holiday service through the summer season.
The swim area is a roped section off the sandy beach, and it is the only place in the pond where swimming is allowed. DCR posts the swimming area hours as 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Lifeguards are on duty Memorial Day and on weekends until June 14, then seven days a week from June 15 through Labor Day. Inside the ropes, DCR prohibits flotation devices, masks and snorkels, and balls and Frisbees are not allowed on the beach. DCR does not publish depth or water temperature figures for the pond. There is a bathhouse with restrooms and showers, a first-aid station, a concession stand, a beach mat and beach wheelchairs.
There is no charge to swim or to park. Most picnic sites are first come, first served, and DCR also takes reservations for some day-use sites. The park itself is open dawn to dusk. Dogs must be leashed in the recreation area and are not allowed on the beach or in the water, and boats of any kind are not allowed on the pond. There is no fishing from the beach, alcohol is banned, and grills are limited to propane in the designated picnic areas.
Take the swim rules seriously here. An 18-year-old drowned at the pond in June 2026, another swimmer had to be pulled out by lifeguards a few weeks later, and a man died in an earlier year after going into the pond to get a ball. Stay inside the ropes, and swim only while lifeguards are on the stand. The beach is also tested for bacteria during the season, and it was closed to swimming for high bacteria counts in 2023 and again in early July 2024. Check the Massachusetts Department of Public Health beach dashboard or DCR's posted notices before going on a hot weekend.
Beyond the beach there are ball fields, a playground, picnic groves and the Marigold Marsh boardwalk. The pond is stocked with trout, and anglers fish from the shore away from the swim area. Houghton's Pond is also a main trailhead for the Blue Hills, with paths heading up toward Great Blue Hill and across the 7,000-acre reservation for hiking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing. The Refreshment Pavilion, which now holds the concession stand, is on the National Register of Historic Places, and the visitor center has an exhibit on the Civilian Conservation Corps crews who worked in the reservation in the 1930s.
