The Hill AFB Sledding Hill is a winter favorite tucked onto Hill Air Force Base in northern Utah, a fun, family-friendly slope that turns into a lively sledding and tubing spot whenever the snow piles up. It sits on the hill behind the base golf course clubhouse, and the golf course opens it free of charge for sledding through the winter, giving base families a convenient, no-cost place to spend a snowy afternoon close to home. On a good snow day it fills with the happy chaos of kids, sleds and tubes, with the Wasatch Front rising to the east.
The one essential thing to understand before planning a trip is access. Hill Air Force Base is an active, controlled-access military installation, so this is not a drop-in public sledding hill. Entering the base requires proper credentials: military members, Department of Defense civilians and their families come and go with their IDs, while other visitors must be sponsored and arrange a pass in advance through the base Visitor Control Center, presenting a valid government-issued photo ID and vehicle information, with day passes issued at the gate. In practice, that makes this a spot for the Hill AFB community, base personnel, their families, and their sponsored guests, rather than the general public.
For those with base access, it's a genuinely handy amenity. The slope behind the clubhouse offers a good, sledding-friendly pitch, an open runout, and the ease of a spot just minutes from base housing, no long drive into the mountains required. Like any sledding hill it's an unsupervised, bring-your-own outing, with no lifts, no rentals and no attendants.
Sledding is always more fun than it is careful, so a little caution goes a long way. Speeds build quickly on packed or icy snow, and younger sledders do best with a clear runout and an adult keeping watch. Helmets are a smart addition, sturdy sleds ride better than flimsy ones, and dressing for the cold in waterproof layers and good boots keeps the fun going longer.
Come after a fresh snowfall for the best surface and smaller crowds, bring your own sled or tube, and pack out whatever you bring in to keep the hill in good shape for the next family. For the Hill AFB community, it's a simple, welcome bit of winter fun right in the backyard; for everyone else, it's worth knowing up front that a base pass is the price of admission.
