Idylwood Park sits on the northwestern shore of Lake Sammamish at 3650 West Lake Sammamish Parkway NE, a few miles south of downtown Redmond. The City of Redmond owns and operates the 17 acres, and the city charges nothing to use any of it. No entry fee, no parking fee, no residency requirement. That matters more here than it sounds, because Idylwood is the only free public recreational access to Lake Sammamish anywhere on the lake. Lake Sammamish State Park at the south end requires a Discover Pass for parking, and most of the remaining shoreline is private. The city counts more than 42,000 visitors across a summer.

The swimming beach runs along the eastern edge of the park, a strip of coarse sand and pea gravel with a long shallow entry. Lake Sammamish is roughly eight miles of glacial trough water that warms through July and August far more readily than Puget Sound does, and the shelf in front of the beach warms first. The dock is worth knowing about. Redmond replaced the original 1970s timber structure in late 2021 with an aluminum pier on a non-slip deck, added handrails built to ADA standards for fishing, and hung a new swim ladder off the end. People swim out to it and climb back out on that ladder.

Nobody is watching them. King County's 2026 guide to lifeguarded beaches lists Idylwood Beach Park by name and records it as not guarded, swim at your own risk, life jackets encouraged, with no loaner life jacket stand and no swim lessons offered. The City of Redmond's facility page says the same thing in a single line. Older reviews online still mention guards on duty until seven in the evening. Those are stale and should not be relied on. Water quality is monitored, which is a different thing from supervision. King County samples the beach weekly from May 15 through September 21, and Idylwood's record is good, passing at least 95 percent of its tests.

Parking is the reliable complaint. The lot is small for the number of people the beach pulls, and on a hot weekend afternoon the overflow lines West Lake Sammamish Parkway with dozens of cars. Arriving before late morning is the practical fix. Redmond has an Idylwood Park Parking Lot Expansion project in design that will rebuild and enlarge the main lot, add ADA stalls, fix the drainage and regrade about 200 feet of pathway. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2027 and finish by early summer 2027, so expect the lot to be torn up for part of that season.

Away from the water there is a bathhouse with restrooms, two picnic shelters that can be reserved through the city, scattered picnic tables, a playground, two sand volleyball courts and a broad lawn that slopes down to the sand. A ramp at the north end launches car-top boats, kayaks and canoes, but not trailered boats. Idylwood Creek, restored in 2002, crosses the north end of the beach and empties into the lake, and the Green Redmond Partnership tends the wooded slope behind the lawn. The park is open dawn to dusk. Camping is not allowed.

Idylwood Park Parking Lot Expansion | Redmond, WA

This project will expand and renovate the Idylwood Park main parking lot to address pavement failures, drainage deficiencies, damaged curbing, and ADA compliance gaps while enhancing safety for pedestrians and cyclists along the park frontage. The work includes reconstructing and expanding the existing lot, removing and regrading the current parking area, and grading adjacent areas to the south to accommodate additional parking capacity. Improvements will also include paving and striping new parking stalls, including code-compliant ADA spaces; installing a comprehensive drainage system with provisions for subsurface flow collection and required runoff treatment; and regrading approximately 200 feet of existing pathway to meet ADA accessibility standards. Upon completion, the project will provide improved accessibility and ensure compliance with current ADA requirements, while addressing underlying drainage and subgrade issues contributing to pavement deterioration.
