Hike, Horseback, and Mountain Bike
Little Hickory Top is a fun, flowy singletrack trail in the popular Bent Creek area of the Pisgah National Forest, just southwest of Asheville, North Carolina — one of the most beloved mountain-biking playgrounds in the Southeast. It's a classic Bent Creek ride: rolling forest, hardwood shade, and a friendly grade that rewards riders without beating them up.
The trail traces a ridge through the experimental forest, mixing gentle climbs with swoopy, root-laced descents. It's a great connector for building loops out of the dense Bent Creek network, and its moderate difficulty makes it approachable for intermediate riders while still fun to rip for veterans. Because Bent Creek is so interconnected, most people ride Little Hickory Top as one leg of a longer day linking trails like Green's Lick and Ingles Field Gap.
The area is multi-use, so you'll share the trail with hikers, trail runners, and the occasional equestrian — dogs are welcome but must be leashed. Ride in control and yield appropriately.
Bent Creek rides best from spring through fall; expect mud after rain and lush green tunnels in summer. Bring water, basic trail tools, and a map or GPS, since the web of intersecting trails can be disorienting on a first visit.
