Mill Creek Day Use Area is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers picnic and shoreline park on the Mill Creek arm of Berlin Lake, a 3,590-acre flood control and water supply reservoir on the Mahoning River in northeastern Ohio. It sits on the east side of the lake in Mahoning County, about 3 miles west of the crossroads village of Berlin Center, right next to the much larger Mill Creek Campground. The Corps manages both from its Berlin Lake project office, and Recreation.gov lists swimming among the activities at the day use area.

From Interstate 76, take Exit 54 and drive south about 5.5 miles on State Route 534 to U.S. Route 224 in Berlin Center. Turn west on 224 for roughly 2 miles, then go south on Bedell Road (County Road 31) for about three quarters of a mile to the day use entrance. Parking is in lots inside the area, a short walk from the water. Mill Creek Campground, a separate reservation-only Corps facility with 295 sites, a boat ramp and showers, sits just to the south off Berlin Station Road.

Know what you are getting before you go: there is no designated swim beach here. The Corps' own Recreation.gov listing says swimming is allowed but there is no designated beach and no lifeguard on duty, so this is shoreline swimming at your own risk. The banks around the lake are described as gently to moderately sloped, which makes wading in from the grass and shore reasonably easy, but expect a natural lake bottom rather than groomed sand. The reservoir averages roughly 10 to 15 feet deep and drops off well beyond the shallows. Water warms through June and is most comfortable from July into early September.

Entry is free. Recreation.gov lists no day use fee, and the area is open year round on a first come, first served basis. The one exception is the group picnic shelter, which holds up to 64 people and can be reserved during the recreation season; when it is not reserved, anyone can use it at no charge. Flush toilets, drinking water and a children's playground are on site. Overnight stays are not allowed in the day use area, so campers need a reserved site at the neighboring campground.

Berlin Lake is busy with powerboats and water skiers on summer weekends, and boats launch from the campground ramp next door, so stay near shore and wear bright colors if you swim out at all. Nobody is watching the water, so children need an adult beside them, and the Corps rangers here actively push life jacket use around the lake. Because the reservoir is regulated for flood control and downstream water supply, the shoreline moves with the pool level, which can expose mudflats or bring the water up into the trees. Check for any harmful algal bloom notices from Ohio EPA or the Berlin Lake office (330-547-3781) in late summer before getting in.

The rest of the visit is mostly about the lake. Berlin Lake is one of the better walleye lakes in Ohio, with natural reproduction of the species, plus largemouth and smallmouth bass, muskie, crappie and bluegill. Ospreys nest around the shoreline and bald eagles turn up now and then. More than 6,800 acres of surrounding project land are managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for public hunting, and Noah's Lost Ark Animal Sanctuary is about a mile south.
