Sandy Pond Beach is the Town of Ayer's public swimming beach, a roughly 1.1-acre strip of sand on the south shore of Sandy Pond near its western end. The Ayer Parks Department and Parks Commission run it as a staffed, lifeguarded beach in summer. Town Meeting voted to create the beach in 1945, and Community Preservation money paid for a 2002 upgrade that added accessible facilities, a dock area, walkways and accessible parking. Sandy Pond itself is a 73-acre glacial kettle pond and a Massachusetts Great Pond, which means the water is held by the Commonwealth as public water.

The beach sits on Sandy Pond Road at its junction with Snake Hill Road, about a mile and a half east of downtown Ayer. Parking is the part to plan around. The town limits the lower lot next to the beach to Ayer residents with a Sandy Pond Beach parking sticker, and it does not spell out on its beach page where non-residents should park, so call the Parks Department at 978-796-5915 before you drive over. Stickers and resident access cards are issued at Town Hall or at the beach facility during open hours.

The swim area is a sandy beach on the pond's south shore, with the open water of the pond beyond it. The pond goes deeper than 20 feet at its deepest point, and in July 2023 a 19-year-old swimmer was found by searchers in 6 to 8 feet of water off this beach and later died, so the bottom drops off within the swimming area. The town does not post water temperatures. As a still kettle pond there is no current, and it is usually warmest from July into August. Swimming is allowed only when lifeguards are on duty. Children under 12 must be with an adult, only U.S. Coast Guard-approved flotation devices are allowed, and dogs and smoking are banned. The Parks Department also runs swim lessons in July and early August.

Ayer residents swim free during the season by showing an ID or a Sandy Pond Beach access card. Non-residents pay a town day-use fee of $8 per adult and $5 per child. The beach is seasonal and opens only for the summer, with lifeguard staffing deciding which days it can open early in the season. The town has posted that swimming is closed for the 2026 season, and outside the season there are no lifeguards and no swimming. Check the town's beach page in late spring for the next season's start date and daily hours before planning a trip.

Water quality is tested through the season and the town posts the results under Water Testing Reports on its beach page. If a sample comes back high, swimming can be closed until a retest passes, so look there first. Sandy Pond is listed as impaired because of invasive plants, mainly fanwort and variable-leaf milfoil, and the Conservation Commission pays for yearly weed management on the pond. Its plant growth is thickest in the shallow coves at the southeast inlet from Long Pond and in the northwest corner, both away from the beach. Water leaves the pond on the west side through a culvert under Snake Hill Road into Flannagan Pond.

Beyond the sand, the town lot has a playground and a basketball court, and the dock area added in 2002. Houses ring most of the rest of the shoreline, so the beach is the main public place to get into the water on this pond.
