Shirley Canyon is widely regarded as one of Lake Tahoe's finest half-day hikes, a spectacular climb up a granite canyon that rises straight out of the base of the Palisades Tahoe ski resort in Olympic Valley, California. In the space of a few miles it serves up rushing waterfalls, cascades tumbling over polished Sierra granite, blooming wildflowers, huge boulders and, at the top, the alpine Shirley Lake, before topping out at the resort's High Camp with sweeping views over the Tahoe high country.

The hike scales to your ambition. A moderate version covers about 3 miles to Shirley Lake with roughly 1,000 feet of elevation gain, while pushing on to High Camp makes it an advanced outing of around 5 miles and 2,000 feet of climbing. Along the way there are three main waterfalls to stop and enjoy, including a dramatic 15-foot drop, plus plenty of flowing water, lush greenery and granite slabs to scramble. It's a genuinely varied and rewarding trail that packs a lot of Sierra scenery into a compact climb.

The waterfalls are the signature, and they're seasonal. The cascades run best in early summer as the snowmelt pours off the peaks, and by late summer the water drops considerably, so timing a visit for June or early July catches the falls at their fullest. The granite that makes the canyon so beautiful is also slick near the water, and the route involves real boulder scrambling and some route-finding, so it earns its "challenging" rating despite its modest length.

Access is easy and clever: park at Palisades Tahoe (1600 Olympic Valley Road), walk down Shirley Canyon Road, and find the trailhead on the left. A popular strategy is to hike up the canyon and then ride the Aerial Tram down from High Camp, turning the climb into a one-way ascent, though the tram runs on the resort's schedule and for a fee.

The season runs roughly June through October, with early summer bringing the fullest waterfalls and peak wildflowers, and fall offering crisp air and quieter trails. This is high Sierra terrain, so afternoon thunderstorms and lingering early-season snow are both worth watching.
