Hayden Butte, better known to generations of locals as "A" Mountain for the giant gold letter "A" near its top, is the landmark volcanic butte rising right in the heart of downtown Tempe beside Arizona State University and Tempe Town Lake. A short, steep hike of only about half a mile to the summit climbs roughly 300 feet to sweeping views over ASU, Sun Devil Stadium, the lake and the whole Salt River valley, making it one of the most popular quick urban hikes in the region.

The butte is far more than a viewpoint. It is a preserve protecting hundreds of Hohokam petroglyphs pecked into its dark basalt centuries ago, and the trail is lined with interpretive signs about the area's deep Native American and pioneer history. The paved-then-rocky path is busy at all hours with students, sunrise and sunset hikers and fitness walkers, and the summit is a beloved spot to watch the city lights come on.

Because it sits in the city, Hayden Butte is easy to reach on foot, by bike or by light rail, and the level Tempe Town Lake pathways at its base offer flat walking, running and cycling along the water. It is short but genuinely steep and rocky near the top, fully exposed to the sun, and brutally hot in summer, so early morning or evening is best in the warm months. Please stay on the trail and never touch the fragile petroglyphs. For a fast dose of big views and history in the middle of the city, "A" Mountain is a Tempe classic.
