Indian Creek Campground is a quiet, wooded retreat in the northern reaches of Yellowstone National Park, a favorite of tent campers looking to escape the crowds at the park's bigger campgrounds. Set among lodgepole pines along Indian Creek, roughly eight miles south of Mammoth Hot Springs on the road toward Norris, it trades amenities for peace, space, and a genuine backcountry feel.
With around 70 first-come, first-served sites, it's one of Yellowstone's smaller and more affordable campgrounds. The setting is prime for wildlife — elk and bison wander the nearby meadows, and the open sagebrush flats of Gardner's Hole spread out close by.
The location is a big part of the appeal: you're within a short drive of Mammoth Hot Springs and its terraces, Sheepeater Cliff, and Obsidian Cliff, with fishing on the Gardner River and Indian Creek and hiking right out of camp. At about 7,300 feet, nights are cold even in midsummer.
The campground is seasonal, typically open from early summer into September, and fills early on peak weekends. A park entrance pass and nightly camping fee are required; come prepared for bears by storing all food properly, and pack warm layers for the chilly high-country evenings.
