Wade Lake is a hidden gem of southwestern Montana — a spring-fed mountain lake famous for its glassy, aquamarine water, tucked into a forested ravine at the southern end of the Gravelly Range. About 43 miles south of Ennis and only 35 miles west of Yellowstone, it's a serene, off-the-beaten-path escape in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest where clear water, quiet pines, and abundant wildlife set the scene.

The 200-acre lake is a paddler's and swimmer's dream. A no-wake speed limit keeps the water calm and peaceful, so it's ideal for canoeing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding along the forested shoreline. The spring-fed water is famously clear — and famously cold — but on a warm summer day a swim in that brilliant blue is unforgettable. Anglers prize Wade Lake too, casting for rainbow and brown trout.

A cozy Forest Service campground sits on the hillside above the lake, with around 25 sites tucked into a dense Douglas-fir forest, each with a picnic table and fire ring, plus vault toilets and drinking water. There's an undeveloped natural boat launch, and nearby Wade Lake Resort rents boats for those who arrive empty-handed. Note there's a stay limit at the campground and no cell coverage in the area, so plan to truly unplug.

Summer and early fall are the prime seasons, when the forest roads (a few miles of gravel off the main highway) are easy and the water is at its most inviting. Bring layers for cool mountain evenings, pack in your supplies, and follow Leave No Trace. Whether you come to paddle, fish, swim, or simply soak in the stillness, Wade Lake is one of Montana's most beautiful and restful little corners.
