Volunteer Park is the beloved community swimming spot in Lakeside, Montana, tucked right into the heart of town on the northwest shore of Flathead Lake, about 12 miles south of Kalispell. It's a free, low-key, wonderfully situated lakeside park, a designated swimming area with floating docks, a sandy beach and grassy lawns on the shore of the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, and it's the kind of easy, welcoming spot where a whole town cools off on a hot summer day.

The swimming is the main event, and it's genuinely good. The beach is sandy with some small rocks, and the swim area is roped off for safety, with two docks with ladders for getting in and out of the lake plus a swim-out dock with its own ladders, a favorite for jumping and diving into the deep, clear water. Flathead Lake is renowned as one of the cleanest large lakes in the world, cold, crisp and famously clear, with none of the hazards of the ocean, which makes it a superb and popular spot for open-water swimming.

The park is well set up for a full day. Along with the lake access and swim docks, there's a boat dock, canoe and bicycle racks, restrooms with a changing room and flush toilets, a large pavilion with eight picnic tables and two smaller pavilions, benches, an outdoor water fountain, and tidy grass and landscaping, everything a family needs to make an afternoon of it. Its in-town location means shops and restaurants are just steps away.

Flathead Lake is large, deep and cold, and the water stays chilly even in summer, so cold shock is a real consideration when jumping from the docks; the swim area is monitored for water quality weekly through the summer season, and staying within the roped area is wise, especially for kids and weaker swimmers. Afternoon winds can pick up on the big lake.

July and August are the prime swimming months, when the surface water is warmest and the beach is liveliest; the shoulder seasons are quieter and the water colder. Lakeside sits on Flathead's scenic west shore, an easy stop between Kalispell and the lake's southern reaches.

Come with a swimsuit and towel, water shoes for the rocky patches, sun protection, and a picnic to use the pavilions. For a free, sandy, dock-lined swimming spot on the crystal-clear water of Flathead Lake, right in the middle of Lakeside, Volunteer Park is about as good as a community beach gets.
