Sprague Creek Campground is a small, intimate campground right on the shore of Lake McDonald along the Going-to-the-Sun Road, about nine miles from the West Entrance and a short distance from Lake McDonald Lodge. Named for early-area settler Amos Sprague, it trades size for one of the finest locations in the park: many sites sit close to the water, with sunset views straight down the lake toward the Continental Divide.

It has only about 25 sites and is deliberately kept simple. Crucially, towed units are not allowed, no trailers, campers or towed vehicles, because the small, tight campground sits right beside the busy Sun Road, so it suits tents and self-contained vehicles rather than big rigs. Flush toilets and drinking water are available, and sites come with picnic tables, fire rings and bear-resistant food storage. Because it is small, lakeside and on the reservation system, it is highly sought after and books up quickly.

The location is the whole appeal. You can step to the lakeshore to paddle, fish or watch the light on the water, and the campground is only a short drive or shuttle ride from Lake McDonald Lodge, the Trail of the Cedars and the Avalanche area farther up the road, and Logan Pass beyond. For campers who want to fall asleep beside Lake McDonald with the Going-to-the-Sun Road at their doorstep, Sprague Creek is a gem, as long as you are not towing.
