Camp and Cave

The Kimama Wind Caves are a series of lava tubes accessed by a crack in the middle of the desert north of Paul, Idaho. These lava tubes create a labyrinth of tunnels to explore. These tunnels should only be ventured into by those with caving experience and proper lighting equipment. The tubes are of varying height, making it difficult to stand up straight through most of the tunnels and a tight crawl through some parts. Some parts of the cave have been collapsed by time and are closed to visitors. The caves should be explored with caution and respect.

The Kimama Wind Caves have a lot of graffiti throughout the system, with some of the content being offensive to some audiences.

I grew up in Paul. My best friend and I explored these caves (and the surrounding 5mile radius) almost every other weekend and mapped them the best we could over the years. We cemented in a stainless steel map just inside the main entrance - off to the right side...sometime between '98 and '20 I think. A few years later we found it all scratched up and someone tried chiseling it out of the cement, so I'm not sure if it is still there. Anyway. Most the tunnels dead-end pretry quick. Although, one tunnel will take you pretty far and deep...about 3hours tight belly crawling - one way. Near the end we hid a PVC time capsule under a pile of loose rocks. At the very end the spring runoff muds the tunnel off. We spent a lot of time trying to dig it out but every spring it was blocked off with mud again. There's another collapsed section of cave about 50yards East (ish) of the main cave. There's not much here but we did find another hidden cave that's super hard to get into. Once inside it opens to a twisting tube about 8ft tall and 150yd long and absolutely no graffiti except one item scrawled on the wall with a burnt stick next to it. It said "Trupe 2, Rupert Idaho, 1924". Sounds crazy, but its there. Not sure why 'troop' was spelled wrong. We put our scout troop number next to it. Anyway...the end the cave just tapers off. We dug there thinking we'd hit the bottom of the tube so we could dig forward to another cavern but we never hit bottom. Instead, about 4ft down we hit a 2inch layer of powdery white stuff (later found out it was a layer of Cinder Cone ash from the last eruption out there) followed by super dark, rich soil. Pretty cool. Been 20years since I've been there. Hope folks haven't buggered it up.

To Cn_larson. It's nice to know that their are cool people out there that find an interesting cool place and they don't trash it, they even try to make the place better for others To experience like with The plaque at the entrance. That was cool. I also really liked the time Capsule idea. That's the Kind of things your suppose to do at a cool place. To bad it's usually The drunken fools or Overgrown children with Far to few brain cells to Keep them from acting like dim-witted morons. You sound cool. Don't ever change.

Me and my girlfriend were in that cave today, the difficult one to the east. Saw 1924 and yours :) no other graffiti still. Flat shovel at the end. I used briefly but it began to crumble. Happy to be in your footsteps 22 years later sir. Would happily send you a photo of it if you wanted. Very cool

I grew up (7 miles away) exploring this cave system. The approach is a gravel road up the eastern slope of Kimama Butte, a burnout lava cone with two craters and a defunct fire lookout, are at the top. Actual pull off to cave is not marked, however a simple internet search provides GPS coordinates. The entrance is a low ceiling/rocky/22 degree angle slope, then opens into a large cavern with a level fine sediment floor. This area is littered with graffiti, beer cans and fire remanence. Growing up, this was a notable party location for teenagers. I in fact, attended a handful. The folklore is that an old farmer spent a lifetime exploring these caves/systems and claims two quite amazing things. 1- that the system does fully connect to the massive Northside aquafer that ultimately pours out the Twin Falls Canyon better known Thousand Springs more than 80 miles away. 2 - that once you reach the aquafer, the cavern opens up and there is a lake. Somewhere, there is another small cave that goes up. If chosen, you will eventually resurface on the western side of the Kimama Butte. I, with three others (Brother/Neighbor/Best Friend) managed to crawl downward into the earth 4-5 hours and then the same back (8+/- hours). We were unable to confirm either of the farmers claims, however, I am certain that we were, the only second others to venture that deep - if not the first if the farmers claims are false It was honestly the most scary and claustrophobic experience of my life. Regardless, the system/caves become more and more calendrical as we went deeper, showing sighs of water erosion and very much like a pipe. There are also a few whispers of the cave entrance on the west slope if Kimama Butte. I cant prove either, but I have had many memorable adventures there and do believe what the old farmer claims. Cheers - Scott
