The Little Pigeon River runs clear and cold through the Greenbrier area of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, just east of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and it's home to some of the best swimming and tubing water in the Smokies. Specifically the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River, this stretch collects into deep, glass-clear pools below small rapids, ringed by boulders and forest, making it a favorite summer escape for families looking to splash, float and cool off in genuinely beautiful surroundings.

Greenbrier is the access point and the heart of it. The area is quieter than the main Gatlinburg corridor of the park, and the river here is the draw: large, deep pools of remarkably clean, clear water where tubers and swimmers play in the pools that gather below the small rapids. The renowned Flint Rock swimming hole is a well-known spot along this stretch, the kind of place where parents relax on the bank while kids splash in the shallows and braver swimmers work toward the deeper water.

Getting there is straightforward. From Gatlinburg, take Highway 321 east about 6 miles to the signed national park entrance on the right, just past the Hungry Bear BBQ, then turn onto Greenbrier Road; the popular swimming area is near the second parking lot on the right, about half a mile in. The Greenbrier entrance also opens onto miles of hiking trails, so a river day pairs naturally with a walk in the woods.

The water is the appeal and the caution both. Mountain rivers run cold even in summer, the rocks are slick, and the pools deepen quickly near the rapids; currents strengthen fast after rain, so it's worth checking depth before jumping and keeping a close eye on children and weaker swimmers around the moving water. This is undeveloped park water with no lifeguards.

Summer is prime for swimming, when the pools are warm enough to enjoy and the Greenbrier area is lush and green; spring brings higher, colder flows and wildflowers, and fall paints the river corridor in color. Weekends and holidays fill the parking lots, so an early arrival helps.

Come with water shoes for the slick rock, a towel, sun protection for the open boulders, and a trash bag to pack out. As part of the national park, the usual rules apply, including no pets on most trails. For a clean, clear, boulder-lined swimming hole in the quieter corner of the Smokies, the Little Pigeon River at Greenbrier is about as good as it gets.
