Ramsey Cascades is the tallest waterfall in Great Smoky Mountains National Park — a thundering 100-foot, multi-tiered cascade hidden deep in the old-growth forest of the Greenbrier area near Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Reaching it is a genuine accomplishment, rewarding strong hikers with one of the most beautiful and powerful waterfalls in the Smokies, set amid some of the largest old-growth trees in the East.

This is a challenging hike, not a casual stroll. The Ramsey Cascades Trail runs about 8 miles round trip with over 2,000 feet of elevation gain, climbing steadily alongside the river. The final third-of-a-mile is especially rugged, scrambling over steep rock steps, roots, and boulders. Along the way you'll pass through a magnificent cove-hardwood forest of giant tulip trees — worth the trip on their own.

Take the safety here seriously. The rocks around the falls are deceptively slick and the current is powerful: a park sign notes that several people have died climbing on the rocks at Ramsey Cascades. Do not climb on or around the waterfall — admire it from the base and keep well back from the wet rock. In summer, also watch for hornet nests that hang at about eye level over the trail.

Come prepared for a strenuous day: sturdy boots, plenty of water and snacks, and an early start so you're not rushing the rocky sections. Spring brings powerful flow and wildflowers; fall paints the forest in color. To reach the trailhead, follow the Greenbrier entrance off Highway 321 east of Gatlinburg to the end of the road. Respect the rocks, pace yourself for the climb, and Ramsey Cascades rewards you with the Smokies' grandest waterfall.
