Promised Land Main Beach is the larger of the two sand beaches at Promised Land State Park, laid out along the north shore of Promised Land Lake in the park's Day Use Picnic Area, Pike County. The lake covers 422 acres and carries roughly nine miles of shoreline. It sits about 1,800 feet up on the Pocono Plateau inside a 3,000-acre park that is itself wrapped in 12,464 acres of Delaware State Forest, and the beech, oak, maple and hemlock come down almost to the waterline.

DCNR opens the beach daily from late May through mid-September, 8:00 A.M. to sunset. There are no lifeguards. Pennsylvania runs nearly all of its state park lake beaches on an open swim policy, which means you swim at your own risk inside the buoy line and park staff patrol rather than guard. Anyone 10 or younger has to be with a person at least 14. The sand is smoke-free, with designated smoking spots set back from the water.

The water is the part first-time visitors misjudge. Promised Land Lake drains a plateau full of peat bogs and conifer, so it reads brown-green rather than blue and the pale sand shelf disappears from sight a few steps out even when the lake is perfectly clean. Entry is gradual and sandy underfoot instead of the cobble you hit on a lot of Pocono lakes. Gas motors are banned outright and electric boats are held to slow, no-wake speed, so nothing crosses the swim area at speed. On a breezy afternoon, though, nine miles of shoreline gives the wind enough room to put real chop on the surface.

Pennsylvania state parks do not charge an entrance fee, and the beach costs nothing to use. The picnic area behind it has parking, restrooms, drinking water, a playground, a sand volleyball court and a basketball hoop, and there are pay showers in the day use area. A paved trail leads down to the picnic area and the beach. Two pavilions can be reserved up to eleven months ahead for a fee; unreserved pavilions are free on a first-come basis. The refreshment stand near the beach runs weekends only, noon to 6:00 P.M., from the Saturday before Memorial Day through Labor Day. The boat concession off PA 390 just south of the day use area rents rowboats, canoes, one- and two-person kayaks and paddleboats daily across the same season, 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. on weekdays and 8:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. on weekends and holidays.

Expect company on summer weekends. The park is a one to three hour drive from Allentown, Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, about 100 miles north of Philadelphia and 35 miles from the New York and New Jersey lines, so holiday weekends fill the day use lot and push cars into the overflow. Canada geese work the swim area and the grass above it, and DCNR asks visitors not to feed them for the obvious sanitary reason. Black bears live in the park, so food left unattended on a blanket is a mistake. When the main beach is shoulder to shoulder, the park's second beach sits at the end of the Pickerel Point Campground peninsula, roughly a mile and a half down the lake, unguarded as well and usually quieter.
