Plan around a long closure before you plan anything else. Pennsylvania DCNR has scheduled a complete drawdown of Tobyhanna Lake from the spring of 2027 through December 31, 2028 so the dam can be rebuilt and the lakebed dredged. For that entire stretch the lake, the stream bed, the boat launches and the swimming area are all closed to the public, and that covers swimming, boating and fishing alike. Recreation trails and the modern camping area stay open throughout. The Fish and Boat Commission has already lifted seasons, sizes and creel limits on every species except trout in anticipation of the draining, which is a fair signal of how firm the schedule is. Outside that window the beach runs normally, but call the park office at 570-894-8336 before driving out.

Tobyhanna Lake Beach is the designated swimming area on the east shore of the 170-acre Tobyhanna Lake, inside 5,440-acre Tobyhanna State Park in Coolbaugh Township, Monroe County. There is no entrance fee and no parking charge. Pennsylvania state parks are free to enter and the beach itself costs nothing. The sand beach opens on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and runs to mid-September, 8:00 a.m. until sunset. DCNR posts it as swim at your own risk, so do not count on a lifeguard at any hour. The bathhouse has flush toilets and changing areas. Showers are the one thing you pay for. Smoking is banned on the beach and in the swimming area, e-cigarettes included.

The water tells you straight away that this is a Pocono bog lake and not a quarry or a mountain tarn. Tobyhanna Creek feeds it through Bender Swamp, a sedge and shrub wetland thick with sphagnum, and the peat leaches tannins that stain the lake the color of weak tea. Visibility falls away within a foot or two of the surface even under full sun, so the bottom is something you feel rather than see. Entry from the beach is a gradual sand shelf, kind to bare feet, and the shallows warm far faster than the main body of the lake ever manages.

The park sits at roughly 2,000 feet, and that altitude is why the season is so short. The lake is slow to shed its winter cold and it gives that cold back early in the autumn. Swimming here in early June is bracing in a way the same date at a lowland Pennsylvania lake is not. Mid-August into early September is the dependable stretch.

Access is off Pennsylvania Route 423, which runs north out of the village of Tobyhanna and reaches the main park entrance a couple of miles up. The park address is 114 Campground Road. Day use parking sits close to the beach. The park is open every day of the year from sunrise to sunset, with day use areas closing at dusk.

A 5.1-mile blue-blazed trail loops the entire lake. It is level, well cleared and mostly gravelled, which makes it an easy walk to pair with a swim. Only electric and non-powered boats are permitted, so the lake stays quiet, and seasonal rentals operate through the summer. The campground is large and fills on summer weekends. One real oddity of this place: the park was carved in 1949 out of an artillery training range that preceded Tobyhanna Army Depot, and DCNR still warns that anyone exploring the remote, undeveloped corners of the property may come across old unexploded shells. That is a backcountry concern rather than a beach one, but it is worth knowing before you leave the marked trails.
