Sled

Sandpiper Hill is Eagle Mountain's go-to family sledding hill, a long, gentle slope on the west side of Utah Valley that manages the trick of being fun without being frightening. It's the kind of hill parents actually relax on: big enough to absorb whatever crowd shows up after a storm, long enough to give kids a real ride, but not so steep that anyone's white-knuckling it at the bottom.

That gentle pitch is the whole appeal. Plenty of sledding hills in Utah are either too tame to be interesting or fast enough to make a parent nervous, and Sandpiper lands squarely in between. The slope runs long enough to keep kids climbing back up for another go, and its width means a busy snow day doesn't turn into a game of dodging other sledders. For young children and first-timers it's close to ideal.

There's a small stream at the bottom of the hill, which sounds alarming and mostly isn't: it's typically frozen over through the sledding season, and sleds generally come to a stop well before reaching it. Still, it's the one feature worth knowing about before you turn kids loose. Conditions change with the weather, and a warm spell or a fast, icy surface can alter both how far sleds run and how solid that stream is, so it's worth walking the runout and having a look before the first ride of the day.

Eagle Mountain sits on the western edge of Utah Valley, out past Lehi and Saratoga Springs, in a fast-growing corner of the county that's still short on developed winter recreation, which is part of why this hill is so valued locally. It's free, unsupervised and bring-your-own; there are no rentals, no lifts and no attendants.

Winter is obviously the season, and like every sledding hill in Utah, it depends entirely on what the sky delivers. The best runs come the morning after a fresh snowfall, before the slope gets packed slick and icy in the afternoon. Once the snow melts out, it's simply a hillside again.

Dress for real cold in waterproof layers and proper boots, bring your own sled or tube, park considerately in the surrounding neighbourhood, and pack out whatever you bring, broken sleds included. For families in Eagle Mountain, Saratoga Springs and Lehi looking for an easy, free, genuinely kid-friendly afternoon in the snow, Sandpiper Hill is the neighbourhood answer.
